Why do fat people wear clothes that are too tight?

Asked by Ranimi23 (1917points) March 12th, 2010

I’m not kiding at all. It looks funny but to me it it really strange. Don’t you have a mirror to look at before you go out?

I see fat girls with their flabby stomachs hanging out at the mall and girls who are overweight wearing skin-tight shirts and leggings.

Why do fat people wear clothes that are too tight? There are plenty of places that sell clothing for larger people, so why do they wear clothes that are so tight?

I hope it’s because they’re confident and they don’t care about people talking shit.

tinyfaery's avatar

Why do you care? If you don’t like it, don’t look.

dpworkin's avatar

If they were smart, they wouldn’t be fat in the first place would they? They just like to eat whatever they want, spread all over our airplane seats, and look like shit. They buy their clothing too small to rub it in our faces.

Shae's avatar

I see lots of people of ALL sizes wearing clothes that are too small or too large for them.

toomuchcoffee911's avatar

In an attempt to look thinner?

Coloma's avatar

Wow…dpworkin’....good thing your furorhood is confined to a few words on a blank sceen, atrocities have been committed for this sort of biased thinking. Hmmm..seems to me I’d rather be fat and kind, than thin and bigoted! Gag!

Adagio's avatar

Maybe the clothes were not tight when they first purchased them…?

HTDC's avatar

It’s a mental thing. People like to think they are the same size as they were a year ago, so they wear the same size clothing. Buying a size up, is admitting you’re overweight and you need bigger clothes. People don’t want to accept that, sometimes the truth can be scary.

Just_Justine's avatar

Why do thin people wear clothes too big? why do people with long arms wear sleeves that are too short? Or shoes one size too small? Or glasses that slide down their nose? Why you picking on fat people in particular?

dpworkin's avatar

@Grisaille You really shouldn’t defend me. I should be greeted with howls of execration for my extreme views on the horizontally challenged.

DominicX's avatar

Because they doesn’t afraid of anything.

Ranimi23's avatar

Maybe you all right, the question should be not only for fat people at all. I just think we don’t see ourself as we should in the mirror. Something is wrong in our thinking :-/

wilma's avatar

I’m with @Shae on this one, I see thin people wearing clothing that is too tight and frankly that doesn’t look good either.
I would rather see clothes too big than too small, but that’s just my opinion.

Just_Justine's avatar

@Ranimi23 maybe we don’t see ourselves in “life’s” mirror which does not always count for much.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

Yeah, how dare these freaks show their face outside where you, an ideal of beauty (charmed, I’m sure), reside and go about your day – why don’t they just look in the mirror and kill themselves for being so horrible-looking?! geez
@dpworkin EDITED BECAUSE YOU WERE BEING SARCASTIC.

ucme's avatar

The shit they pull eh.Why do judgmental fuckers open their mouths without engaging their brains?I dunno.

Steve_A's avatar

Because they can.

In the end you should just ask the person, everyone has there own reason for wearing what they wear. Ask them.

janbb's avatar

@dpworkin Stranger, much?

HTDC's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir I know and what about those skinny people wearing baggy clothes? I mean who do they think they are? Strutting around with their oversized clothes, absolutely disgusting…!

wilma's avatar

Editing myself, because I don’t want to be in this question any more.

even if I’m not fat, now I’m wondering who’s, looking down their nose at my figure and wondering why I’m wearing that.

MissAnthrope's avatar

I know it’s not the most aesthetically-pleasing thing ever, but Jesus H. Christ, don’t people have more important things to worry about and get worked up over?

Just_Justine's avatar

@dpworkin not all larger people eat whatever they want and spread it all over the place. Not all large people do not exercise. Maybe look up people like Chrystal Renn, Nancy Hayssen. who are people who decided to just be themselves and not smash themselves into a shape you would consider OK. Plus are earning more than you will ever earn because of it.

DominicX's avatar

@Just_Justine

Being fat is not healthy.

This question says fat, not “larger”. There is a difference.

dpworkin's avatar

@Just_Justine Wrong. All them fuckin’ fat bastards do it on purpose to piss regular people off.

Just_Justine's avatar

@DominicX hey some large people work out, eat healthily and some skinny’s don’t. Of course though I am not generalizing like you are. I said some.

Just_Justine's avatar

@dpworkin profound, totally.. my life has changed completely I’ve had a zen moment thanks

I wonder the same thing. And NOT TO BE RUDE. But I just don’t get it. MAINLY because it can not be comfortable. I’m really not overweight, but even when I wear tights I feel like death all night because they squeeze me a bit. I hate that feeling. How wearing spandex pants 3 sizes too small isn’t excruciatingly painful when it’s cutting into fat, I just cannot comprehend. I really would like to know an answer, too. I think the answer is that it’s the mental thing. People don’t want to think they have gotten bigger. I do the same thing though….doesn’t everyone?

Just_Justine's avatar

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities mine is perfectly in place actually.

CMaz's avatar

Yea, and explain when it was ok for someone’s gut to hang out?

Especially with the girls. Or is it just societies adjustment to obesity.

Just_Justine's avatar

@ChazMaz especially with the girls?? oh dear.

CMaz's avatar

Don’t get politically correct with me. ;-)

When I went to school, ya never saw a girl with her gut hanging out.

Now it is “fashionable.” You see it everywhere.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@ChazMaz First of all I don’t think that’s fashionable or considered so by anyone – and what’s fashionable changes so what – doesn’t give you a right to be pissy about how others look.

Just_Justine's avatar

@ChazMaz remember when “fat ass’s” were not politically correct? Now people buy them.
:P

filmfann's avatar

I am sure that the last thing heavy people want to do is go clothes shopping, which means they have older clothes, that they used to fit into.
Plus, they may be in denial. “a 46 waist? No way! I’m sticking to these 42s!

CMaz's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir – Come on Simone.

I did not say anything derogatory to come off pissy. Just wanted to get to the fat of the question. ;-)

Just an observation. I wanted clarification.

bea2345's avatar

Because fat people do not stay the same size for long. One tends to get fatter. And there is no such thing as a standard large. So being fitted for clothes once you pass 44D in bra sizes is a chancy business unless either (a) you have money to spend in designer salons or (b) you can sew. It is a deal I had to live with for many years. Dressing up for special occasions meant much thought and expense. Designs intended for smaller sizes simply do not look good on fat women. Might I add that African dresses, especially those worn by Nigerian women are particularly becoming to the large hipped and big-busted. If you are fat, looking good is expensive. After a while one stops trying.

bea2345's avatar

Addendum to the above: clothes are cheap in the US, but not that cheap.

PandoraBoxx's avatar

Several reasons:
1. The clothes did fit when they purchased them, but shrunk throughout washings.
2. The clothes did fit once, and they’ve gained weight. However, if they can still get in them, then they really didn’t gain that much.
3. They have always worn a size 10, even though they’ve gained 30 lbs. in the last year.
4. They’re embarrassed to shop in the larger person size
5. They really think the clothes are supposed to look that way.
6. They really don’t care what you or anyone else think.

mcbealer's avatar

Here are some observations I have made, which of course do not universally apply to all people on the planet who are overweight.

- Many overweight people are OK with their curves, and therefore wish to wear revealing clothes just as much as the next person.
– There is a known attachment to the number on size labels, especially among young women. I’ve seen this with both skinny and overweight friends. They are willing to squeeze into a smaller sized pair of jeans just so they can say, “I’m a size so-and-so.”
– Unfortunately, many people do not understand that clothes are supposed to flatter. Ever watch the show on TLC called What Not to Wear? The people who win makeovers are of all different proportions, sizes, and weight. And they are all equally in the dark about how to dress in a flattering way.
– Attention. I’ve seen it hapen in the workplace, and although they also get made fun of behind the scenes, large girls who show off their ta-tas get lots of male attention. Yes, even if their waist is way larger than their bustline.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

Because they want people like you to ask stupid questions like these.

mrrich724's avatar

Because there is something wrong with them.

If you think about it, how else besides a psycological problem, do you explain the fact that people eat and eat and eat, until they are so big that it threatens their health, their ability do do daily tasks with ease, and their social lives . . . yet they continue to do it.

There is just literally something wrong, and I’m guessing the part of the brain that says “hey, stop eating, and care about yourself” is also the part that is responsible for making you care about how you look.

Sarcasm's avatar

My thought process, as an overweight man, is the same as @deni.‘s
I just can’t understand how it’s comfortable to be in clothing 3 sizes too small.
I wear L or XL shirts. I’ve tried putting on M shirts and I felt like I was going to suffocate.

monkey28rb's avatar

fat girls wearing tight cloths are nasty!!

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@monkey28rb aww, well what an enlightening comment – thanks for that.

bea2345's avatar

@mrrich724 – Since you have to live with yourself, you are not going to see yourself as others see you. Besides, few people will stop a bad habit (such as overeating) in order to please others: they do it out of self regard. That is why Weight Watchers continues in business.

Coloma's avatar

Obesity has many components.

Behavioral, emotional, genetic, age related, family history.

My mother was 5’2 and never weighed more than 105 lbs. her entire life, my dad was 6’2 and weighed about 240 I’d estimate. I turned out to be 5’4, ideal weight around 125–130…BUT…if I don’t WORK MY ASS OFF AND STARVE my body WANTS to be 40 lbs. heavier than I WANT it to! lol

Seriously….to remain in ‘fit’ condition I must walk/run 3 miles per day, about 1 hour, plus another 20–30 minutes strength training, weights, floor excercises AND..NOT exceed 1500 calories a day!

Gets OLD real fast so I allow my weight to fluctuate when I just don’t care to work THAT HARD ALL THE TIME!!!!!

Be careful about making blanket statements about anything!

mrrich724's avatar

@bea2345, I agree that your self image is different than how others perceive you. But generally, it seems that people are their own harshest critics.

And the comment regarding why people stop bad habits is in line with my comment that something is literally wrong, because if people stop a bad habit out of self regard, then why would one allow themself to become obese?

Did I read your statements correctly or should I have taken that another way?

Holy Smokes that’s the funniest web site I’ve ever seen! Thank you thank you thank you!

It’s like Doctor Seuss meets Burning Man… Only this is in our own neighborhood. 231 pages of absolute proof there is no intelligent life in the universe. I’d rather go to there than the Zoo.

HTDC's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Nods head…My job is done.

bea2345's avatar

@mrrich724 – no, you have read my statements correctly. Of course, when I looked at myself in the mirror, I knew I was too fat, that it was damaging to my health and physical appearance. At the same time, I had the contradictory belief that being fat was just one of those things. Eating was just one of the behaviours I adopted in order to cope. It could have been illicit drugs. It could have been sex. The consequences, as any habituated person could tell you, I hesitate to call it addiction, include not really caring what happens to you. How far this goes depends on the person. In my case, it was the fear of incapacity, rather than of death, that made me stick to the prescribed regimen when I learned I had diabetes. The change to my life, when I had shed 80 pounds, was almost magical.

mrrich724's avatar

@bea2345 I am glad you were able to lose the weight.

And I would not hesitate to call it an addiction. It’s sad, but humanity does things that are not good for them, whether it’s overeating, drugs, cigarettes, WAR.

bea2345's avatar

Thank you. It was like losing 80 friends. Of course, keeping it off is a constant struggle, but they say that is good for the soul.

Why do people on the internet engage trolls?

GingerMinx's avatar

I’m fat and I do not wear tight clothes. But then, I wouldn’t wear tight clothes even if I was the correct weight, I just like big floppy clothes. Why does it bother you so much what someone wears? I never understood this obsession people have over other peoples lives. You don’t have to look at them you know.

phillis's avatar

I’m not kidding, either. Are all your personal issues resolved to the point that you can afford to have such a critical eye? In the grander scheme of things, I hardly see how this matters.

coogan's avatar

Is it fair to deny these people “sexy” clothes? They’ve been forced to buy smaller clothes to get the look they want.

kyanblue's avatar

This sounds like a rant, but I’ll take the bait:

I tend to think that there are many, many people out there who dress badly, either because they hop on a trend or buy whatever’s in store at the moment (harem pants, ew) without thinking about whether it truly looks good on them, or because they just don’t care and just need to look somewhat presentable and feel comfortable, or because they are struggling with self-esteem issues that are reflected in how they dress. (Or they forgot to do the laundry.)

It’s much easier to dress badly as a size 6…yeah, maybe you’ve got a bit of a tummy and you’re bulging a little over the top of your pants, but it isn’t as immediately obvious that the jeans don’t fit as when you’re a size 12 wearing too-tight jeans.

Clothing and size and numbers and fit are so tied into self-esteem. It does indeed make people feel better to put on size 8 pants that are uncomfortable around the gut than to wear size 10 pants that are perfectly fitted.

Berserker's avatar

Why do skinny gangster wannabe dudes wear pants three sizes too big for them and walk around looking like they just took a huge shit?

Either way who the fuck cares. People can dress how they want as long they’re comfortable with it.

squidcake's avatar

My sister is rather overweight, and she wears atrociously tight shirts.
I’m pretty sure it’s because if she wears loose clothes she thinks it makes her look even larger, more boxy. Like the effect of wearing a muumuu.
She just doesn’t get it, really.

YARNLADY's avatar

The reason I do it is because I don’t like shopping for clothes, or spending money for new clothes when the ones I have are still serviceable. I don’t care what other people think about the way I look, especially strangers. When I do want to ‘impress’ people, I dress accordingly.

escapedone7's avatar

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

I don’t think they intentionally choose to wear tight clothes——it’s only because there are not much clothes out there that have the really big sizes that they need.

mrentropy's avatar

It’s like an all-over girdle. Squeeze into a pair of tights and it contains everything nicely. Also, you get to jump start the “overstuffed sausage” look.

yep. waitin’ for the hate mail

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@mrentropy is that because you get no other mail?

mrentropy's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir I rarely get any mail, and I can’t understand why!

@mrentropy maybe your clothes are too tight

YARNLADY's avatar

@mrentropy The choices are jiggly or sausage. Personally, I prefer sausage.

mrentropy's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir I think the strap on my baseball cap is too tight.
@YARNLADY I would actually go with something looser than tighter, but that’s a personal choice. If I had the opportunity I would get a Batman body suit with built in abs.

Pandora's avatar

@MRSHINYSHOES I agree.
Have you ever seen clothing for people pass size 14. They are either matronly, or shrouded in large stupid flowers that make a person look like a walking garden.
Then for some reason designers think that heavy people have size b cup boobs but the waist is larger than their chest. So think of throwning on a pyramid.
Between size 14 and 16 those are two sizes that don’t exist. If you hold a size 12 up to a 18 you will see a huge difference in size. After 18 it just jumps to plus size and again 1x, 2x and so on. Really big difference then.
I think most just give up since designers only want to design for size 0 these days.
I use to work in a womans department store some years ago and I’ve seen a lot of women just surrender because most of the clothing being sold was either, just an ill fitting sack or something ridiculously expensive and ugly.
Designers decided long ago they were not worth their time to dress well.

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

@Pandora Yes, it seems that there is nothing for fat people to wear but potato sacks!

Pandora's avatar

@MRSHINYSHOES I think even the measurements of a potato sack is probably more accurate than what is put in the store.

Nullo's avatar

I’ve noticed nothing of the sort.
I once heard that wearing clothes that are too big are even less flattering than ones that fit.

delam's avatar

Sometimes yes sometimes no. Just like skinny people sometimes wear clothes that are too tight sometimes.

jca's avatar

when you look at catalogs of large size clothing, they always show models that are like size 12, which is not really “large” but technically, in the fashion world, those models qualify for being large size. so they put these great clothes on the size 12 models, and like all models they have long legs, long torsos, and the clothes look great on them. however, when you take those same clothes and put them in a truly large size, they look awful.

i think overweight people (mostly girls) wear clothes that are too tight because they think it looks good. i think teenage girls who are heavy probably wear the tight clothes because the styles they like don’t go past a certain size, and they want to dress like all their friends.

when i see girls/young women with really tight tee-shirts, fat hanging out over the jeans, stomach tightly wrapped, i think they must not know how bad they look.

lonelydragon's avatar

You need to be a little more tactful and sensitive. You don’t have the right to judge someone else’s appearance unless you have the perfect body, yourself. With that in mind, there are several reasons why overweight people wear tight clothing:

1. Most clothing, even the plus sized variety, is not designed for someone with a larger figure. Most of the time, plus sized pants and shirts are just larger versions of standard sized clothes taht were designed with thin people in mind.

2. Maybe they outgrew their clothing and they can’t afford to buy more. Should they then just walk around wearing trash bags or isolate themselves in their homes until they can afford new ones?

3. Vestigial body image. They still see themselves as being a smaller size, even though they are not. The process can also work in reverse, with a person imagining that his/her body is larger than it actually is.

Nullo's avatar

@lonelydragon
Just out of curiosity, can you prove that the OP doesn’t have the right to judge?

deni's avatar

Half these answers aren’t even answers. They’re mostly criticizing the OP for criticizing overweight people. I don’t get it. It’s a question, just like every other question on here. If you don’t LIKE the question, you don’t have to answer it, just like you don’t HAVE to look at the fat people. Hot damn.

YARNLADY's avatar

@deni I don’t think it’s so much not liking the question, but more like discussing the issue from a different point of view

phillis's avatar

@deni I am surprised by your comment. You’re one of the fairest people I know, if not the wordiest ranter at times. I could have skipped it. But the tone was vulgar, and the subject matter so irrelevant, that I was compelled to give a gut reaction that was well earned.

deni's avatar

It’s just a legitimate question. That’s all I’m saying. Those who are overweight can wear anything they want. But I’m always curious, like I think most people are, about why you’d want to wear something that is as unflattering as possible AND extremely uncomfortable at the same time.

lonelydragon's avatar

@deni Some people have different comfort levels when it comes to clothing. I wear loose clothing because it feels better to me, but I know a lot of people of all sizes who say that they’re more comfortable in tight clothes.

@nullo I was using “you” in the general sense.

phillis's avatar

@deni I can appreciate that. Unnecessary harsh judgement, rather than mere curiosity, seemd to be the store front of this question. You point is valid, as well.

escapedone7's avatar

And I answered the question! They do it to turn me on.
Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean I don’t like it.
If you don’t like it don’t look, and while you have your eyes closed give them my number.
Am I a chubby lover? oh yes indeed!!!!!!!

phillis's avatar
