Why is there no "woman up"?

Asked by bob_ (21888points) April 8th, 2010

Whenever someone says “man up”, you know what that means. So why is there no “woman up”? Or is there, but with different words?

Because men “rise” to the occasion.

Woman are already on top of things.

Perhaps you can fix that…

“Cowgirl, Up!” But that really means something different.

By the same token, most people ask if someone has the “balls” rather than the “ovaries” to do something brave.

When we “woman up,” it is usually because we have the ovaries to do so!

What does “man up” mean in the first place?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

“Get ovary it!” -that’s what you tell those whiny babies ;)

The same reason “real woman” is used far more infrequently than “real man”. Women are given more freedom to divert from the stereotype of a what a woman should be and men are not. Why this I’m not exactly sure. It may have to do with men being more competitive and historically having more duties and roles in society than women.

@rebbel The “definition” can be found here.

“Woman up and shake the sand out of your vagina”

I don’t know. I only know I wish there was no term for vomit called “upchuck”.

DrasticDreamer's avatar

Because saying “Man up” is stupid enough.

@bob_
Thanks.
Don’t know an answer to it though.

Isn’t that covered under “girl power”?

phillis's avatar

Because the ones with the balls are the more delicate of the two. We had to invent something for them so they wouldn’t feel left out. Awww…....:)

I think @DominicX came up with best possible answer.

I had to write my answer so quick that I MADE A MISTAKE!!!

It’s: WOMEN are on top of things…..

There should be an equivalent.

And anyway, real men know that women are tough.
Perhaps tougher than men. Given that they have to tolerate and negotiate our (usually) physically stronger selves.
Not to mention child bearing/rearing.
As a man, being told to Woman Up would be a challenge to have to raise myself up to.

Mind you, I am a male Feminist, with responsibility for two great and beautiful daughters.

The term originated in masculine environments relating to masculine activities. I’m sure that there is a feminine equivalent, though not one that uses the same words.

There are a number of similar, more androgynous terms. “Suck it up” comes to mind, as does “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps.”

laureth's avatar

I’ve heard this concept phrased as “putting on your big girl panties.”

@autumn43
So much for your theory…~_~

@Kayak8
I had a man ask me to “cowgirl up” and he meant it as in, “decide if you want to get serious and be with me or not”. What else is it supposed to mean? without me having to set off work alerts by going into urban dictionary

trailsillustrated's avatar

@laureth is right it’s called ‘big girl panties’ same thing

filmfann's avatar

@Neizvestnaya It’s a sexual position.
@AstroChuck When Princess Diana was pregnant with Prince Charles firstborn, I was hoping they would name him Up, so that you could refer to the family as “Up Chuck and Di”

SeventhSense's avatar

But does women on top of things include details?

loser's avatar

Because women are already there!

Val123's avatar

I don’t know but you made me laugh!
