Stabbing pain, like an ice pick, where my legs meet my groin. What is causing this?

Asked by alannabrook (17points) January 2nd, 2011

Last Christmas (2009) I received a H1N1 Flu shot. Three days later I came down with the flu, which turned into pneumonia, along with a rash that covered 75 % of my body. Then came the stabbing leg pain. I’ve seen 6 doctors and none of them know what’s wrong with me. The pain is much worse when it rains. The Doctors just want to give me narcotics and send me on my way. In fact, it was so bad yesterday that I went to the emergency room. They gave me a shot of morphine and Rx for Vicodin. I can’t stand these drugs. They don’t take the pain away and they just make me sick to my stomach. I think that my initial illness gave me arthritis and the doctors don’t believe this is the case.

Before I got the H1N1 shot, I walked two miles every day and was in great shape…..never sick with a cold or the flu. I’m only 55 and can’t imagine that I will have this “syndrome” for the rest of my life. Please, if anyone knows what’s causing this let me know who I should see for help in solving this problem.

Thanks.

Arthritis is a dull ache, not a sharp pain.

I guess I should have added that my femur bones and knee caps feel like I was hit with one of those black rubber mallets. It’s a constant, dull aching in those areas. The stabbing pains are where my legs meet my groin.

@alannabrook Honestly, my first thought is a hernia. Have you had a hernia exam?

I sent this to @shilolo who is an infectious disease doctor who is on Fluther. He may or may not be around to answer.

@janbb – I’m not sure if shilolo is still active on Fluther. But I have his email so I sent it him to that way.

Yes, I have had a “hernia exam”. One Dr. said I might have pulled a groin muscle, but I know that’s not it because the pain moves from one leg/side of my body then the other side and sometimes it’s on both sides…...and I haven’t done anything to pull a groin muscle. I’m only in serious pain when the rain comes…..when it’s sunny and warm the pain can be controlled with Advil Liqui-Gels.

Have you had an ultrasound done for the afflicted area?

I had the same approximate symptoms starting in April, 2009.

My doctor said it was inflammation, so she had me eliminate corn, potatoes, wheat, tomatoes, and peanuts from my diet. She also had me add fish oil to my diet.

Eventually I was 99.9% pain free (I have an occasional minor episode, but they’re virtually nothing compared to what I felt before), and now I occasionally consume foods from the above restricted list with no problems.

I have a fairly good idea of what you’re experiencing, so I give you my best wishes in eliminating your pain.

It’s unlikely related to your flu shot. Causes of stabbing pain are varied, but people above have good ideas. But it’s impossible to diagnose over the internet without a good history and physical exam.

I have arthritis everywhere and when one of my joints is moved suddenly, there can be sharp pain, or when a new joint chimes in. I would call my hip pain sharp when it gets going. Certainly xrays should show if there’s cartilage missing in your sacroiliac joint or hip joint.

That sounds like a hernia to me. I should know, I’ve had three. :/
