I have a question about my toilet?

Asked by deni (23141points) April 4th, 2011

This is most likely a silly simple question but we have had some plumbing problems since we moved into this house in August. The toilet has overflowed all over the bathroom on two seperate occassions so I’m veryyyyy weary at the slightest problem.

Anyhow: I noticed the toilet was running tonight. I didn’t know what to do….so I left…came back about an hour ago and it was still running so I fiddled with that little wheel near the floor and turned it clockwise til the water stopped running. So…now it’s quiet but what happens when I flush it now? Should I turn the knob back to where it was?

You turned of the water to the toilet. It will flash once and be OK. The second flush will do nothing.

If you take the top off the big bowl you will see a “float”. That is getting stuck so the tub doesn’t know to stop filling with water. Look for something obvious like the chain being cuaght on something.

Your flapper (the rubber thing in the bottom of your tank) isn’t sealing, for whatever reason. Right now, you’ve turned the water off. As @math_nerd says, that’ll get you one flush.

@augustlan :: If the flapper isn’t sealing the water will go into the bowl and not overflow unless it is clogged in the trap or beyond. There should be a overflow that spills the water into the bowl if the float is busted but it could be that it is putting more water than the overflow can handle.

It should be pretty obvious if you take a look in the toilet tank.

@math_nerd Yeah, I just meant that the ‘running’ is likely from the flap not closing. The overflow is something different than just that, for sure.

Is it overflowing from the tank or the bowl? Usually if it keeps running, the chain gotten wrapped up somehow, but it has never caused my toilet to overflow. It just keeps the flap open which means the tank never fills.

However, overflowing from the bowl (in my experience) means there is a clog in the sewer line. I have had mine snaked before. Now, I just use Drano (for toilets) on a periodic basis and it keeps it running smoothly, so far.

Here are the ABCs of repairing a leaky commode:

First, the leaking water, inside the bowl, has nothing to do with the commode overflowing.

Second, cut off the water supply to the commode.

Go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy a replacement kit for your commode. A worker there will help you and explain how to change out the internal guts of your commode. They are very helpful.

Next, go back home and read the entire instructions on the repair kit package. Remove the old internal workings and replace with the new.

Still confused? Then, call your boyfriend over and ask him to PLEASE do this for you.

It’s really a man thing.

Although I am a gal, I have completely replaced the tank guts of several commodes over the years—it is a pretty easy task and good to know how to do. JP is correct in his approach (any plumbing person at a home center kind of store can explain how to install tank parts and the written instructions are usually very straight forward).

Fixed! Thanks yall. I put it off into this morning because I have a fear of the back part of the toilet (do not make fun) and luckily when I woke up this morning my landlord was outside!

@deni
I have a fear of toilets also….but not as bad as when I was younger.

@dxs What is grosser or more horrifying than the sight of a toilet about to overflow? UGH

I have done plenty o’ plumbing in my day and I’m female. There ain’t no rocket science involved, it’s just gross sometimes. I had a piece of kind of stiff plastic caught against the seal of my toilet and had had to take the toilet off to find out about it.

@deni
Exactly. (This is kinda gross; read at your own risk)
When I was young, around 5ish I flushed a toilet in a public restroom and it overflowed (not my defecation) and I slipped on the flowing fecal-water and tripped and my whole body and clothes were covered in shitty water and I remember some on my face, particularly my mouth. I have been affraid ever since, and sitll am but can get over it now. I actually have a job that deals with plumbing somewhat.

@dxs It’s 4:58 AM and I’m laughing hysterically…..thank you.

Not that thats funny AT ALL, in fact its particularly gross but….the thought of anyone tripping or slipping is just always so funny.
