How do I stop touching/playing with my piercing?

Asked by FluffyChicken (5521points) June 25th, 2011

I got my nose pierced on the side a few days ago. I realize that the worst possible thing I could be doing is touching it with my grubby little fingers, so of course that’s exactly what I keep catching myself doing. Are there any psychological techniques or devices that can be employed to keep me from playing with it? I still have to be able to function in the world, so it’s not like I can put socks on my hands or something. How do I get myself to stop touching it?

Can you ask someone to yell at you if they see you doing it? You’re probably doing it absentmindedly, and a simple reminder could help train you not to do it.

Why not just be more aware of what you’re doing? Just stop touching it. And be aware when you are.

@sliceswiththings That’s a good idea for when I’m around people. How about when I’m alone?

Keep your fingers busy with something else such as text messaging, playing a video game, reading a book, taking a shower, writing, typing, etc.

If you need help being mindful of what you’re doing, carry something small in each hand. Each time you go to touch your piercing, your hand will feel odd because it is in a different position than is normal for touching the side of your nose. This will make you aware of what you are about to do so that you can stop it. Put the objects in your pockets when you need to do something with your hands, but don’t forget to take them out again. As a bonus, this will also train you to be more aware of what you’re doing when you don’t have things in your hands.

Get your nails done? I don’t know, anytime I’ve gotten a new piercing, I’ve gotten acrylics or gels, and it keeps me from playing with my piercings. Maybe it’s just me, and nails can get costly, but if you have the money, it looks nice, and it’ll keep you from playing with your piercing. Otherwise, just keep your hands busy. When your hands are still, doodle some drawing or something to keep your hands busy.

Think about all the little germs on your fingers and the fact that they may have nasty bacteria which can cause infections and BE AWARE of where those fingers are. Stop immediately when you find them approaching the forbidden area. I like @SavoirFaire ‘s idea of finding something else for your fingers to do. Worry beads or a smooth stone to finger could keep them from straying. It’s hard to get rid of a bad habit, but it makes you feel so good when you succeed! Good luck!

@SavoirFaire That sounds like a really excellent exercise in awareness, whether I have something I need to keep my hands off of or not.
