you don;t get it, boot camp let’s you run windows natively, the 2 programs you mentioned just run windows inside OS X

Yea, I have Parallels and it works great but I would rather have a little bit more RAM to make it go faster, I have two gigs and I split them up evenly to make things great, and up until they started charging for VMware I even had Linux running on my mac! I would go with Parallels only because I work with more, maybe another bias statement can come along for VMware to help you decide.

I would go with VMWare just because they have been around longer on the PC side and probably understand the inner workings of the PC OSes better. It also might be easier to take your Windows VM from the mac and move it to Linux/PC if you like because their product would likely be compatible with other versions of itself.

Disclaimer: VMware is a sister company to mine, I got a free copy of VMware Fusion

I currently run Ubuntu and Windows under VMware Fusion and haven’t had any problems. VMware supports 64-bit, it’s easy to download VM’s (I downloaded the file for HaikuOS and played around with it for a bit), I can play a lot of my windows games and it some other nice features I’m forgetting right now. I think performance is about the same, you’d have to find a site that does an objective comparison.

Yes I know that @iwamoto!!!and thank you all for your answers!

Bootcamp will give you better performance than any virtualization software, but VMware is a better virtual environment than Parrallels. Boot camp is also free!!

I thought the reason people went mac was to get away from windows. Wasn’t it? Isnt that apples sales pitch for the last 20 years.

phoenyx's avatar

Some software is written only for windows. At work I have to make sure that web pages display well in Internet Explorer, for example.

swimmindude2496's avatar

@b
Oh Boot Camp is free???

@Lightlyseared
true but I like both

@phoenyx
right

b's avatar

Yes, Boot Camp is incorporated into 10.5, but you still need a valid copy of XP or Vista.

swimmindude2496's avatar

YES AND THAT DOES COST A LOT OF MONEY! DO YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW HOW MUCH THAT IS?

Lightlyseared's avatar

about the same as a cheap pc!

swimmindude2496's avatar

and you would consider that how much??? Like 200 or 300

iwamoto's avatar

depens if you can get it through a school program…

swimmindude2496's avatar

What is it isn’t through a school program?

b's avatar

I believe the going cost of XP PRO is around $300. Another option is to find an old Dell or HP that is being recycled, and get the activation number off of the sticker. I am not too sure about the legality, but as long as no one else is using the license you should be fine. Also, poke around on Craigslist.org to see if someone has a license for sale. The only problem with that is it can be hard to tell if its still a genuine copy.

swimmindude2496's avatar

I ahve an old PC can I like take the software out of it?

iwamoto's avatar

depends, some software like office can’t be just copied, other software can be moved though, it realy depends on the software and the way of installation

b's avatar

It can be re-installed if you still have the CD and activation code. Never copy programs in Windows, always re-install.

swimmindude2496's avatar

And if I don’t have the CD?

iwamoto's avatar

well, some software can be downloaded and installed with the serial you obtained with the purchase, otherwise, you’re screwed…

swimmindude2496's avatar

o I have had that computer for like 8 years.

swimmindude2496's avatar

I have a question you work at Apple right? How old do you have to be to work at Apple? My cousin wants to know.

swimmindude2496's avatar

that question is for iwamoto

iwamoto's avatar

i don’t work AT apple, im an apple tech though, well, my first guess is just 18, im working at an authorised reseller also handling repairs and i’m 22, i mean, they wouldn’t hire a 15 year old, right?

swimmindude2496's avatar

A person in my family just bought a new PC can I use that for Boot Camp????? Or did it already came pre installed without a disc needed? Help.

swimmindude2496's avatar

No meaning they just bought a PC. Can I use the code on that for Boot Camp or since its in use I cant use it?

iwamoto's avatar
