Does anyone think it's possible that Trump is setting the GOP up for failure?

Asked by tedd (14078points) December 8th, 2011

I was reading more today about how the GOP primary is turning somewhat into a circus. The Herman Cain stuff issues that led him out of the race, the irony of people running from someone accused of affairs into the arms of someone convicted of affairs (Gingrich). Bachmann doing a good job of not saying something totally crazy for a while, but really messing herself up with all the anti-gay stuff (yah that’ll win the general election for you). And now the cherry on top, that even Republican stalwarts are declaring as the moment we stepped into a circus…. Donald Trump is hosting a Republican debate.

Now for those not in the know, Trump at one point (see 90’s) was a Democrat, and if I’m not mistaken even ran for an office on the Democratic ticket. Fast forward to a year or so ago when Donald Trump speeds onto the political stream, on the Republican side of things, taking up some of the most extreme right ideals (birther movement for example) and offering the most non-compromising opposition to anything Obama and the Democrats do/propose. He tried to portray himself as a business/capitalist genius, that could use his experience to pull the country out of it’s recession (the irony being he destroyed his own real estate business so bad that he had to do a show, the Apprentice, to make ends meet).

But anyways, the point of this all…. Today while reading it dawned on me. What if Trump is playing the entire GOP for fools? Don’t get me wrong, he’s always been….. shall we say… exuberant. But he’s never been flat out stupid, which some of the positions he took and things he said would suggest he was. Is it possible that he saw the huge Republican swing in the mid-term election and decided he was going to sabotage them? Keep in mind he didn’t really come onto the political scene until some time after the mid-term election.

Maybe he thought “Hey you know what, I’ve got a lot of money and a lot of public clout… if I go into the race on the Republican side, and start spouting off the most ridiculous things that the most extreme persons on that side think…. maybe I can derail the entire resurgence and keep the Democrats in power…” ????

Do you think it’s possible? Can you support that claim (whether it be for or against the possibility)?

The republicans certainly don’t need any help with that…

No, it’s not possible. What’s bigger than Donald Trump’s brain is his ego (by a long shot). He is addicted to hearing and seeing his name in print and on TV.

That is all he wants is 15 more minutes of fame.

Also, he figured that the bozos currently in the face could only make him look good by comparison.

wundayatta's avatar

Not very likely. He’s pretty much of an idiot, and I have no respect for anyone who chooses to work for him.

Correction: in the race (not face).

Taking up some of the most extreme right ideals (birther movement for example)

What’s so extreme about wanting Obama to show his birth certificate in a Country that has a law regarding this? Otherwise, Arnold (I know, I know) and others could become Prez. I think it’s stranger that Obama waited so long – tus creating the so called “movement.” I still am not 100% sure. Look at his parents, his father especially, is background. Where he grew up – where his family lives (Indonesia and Kenya). His name – Hussein.

But whatever you believe, it’s a valid request of the leader of thefree world. And politically, certainly valid and clever.

As for moving from Democrat to GOP – well, he wouldn’t be the first one to do so, now would he? With the shape the US is in, financially, globally, the wars, the medicaire system, the unemployment – hell I’d vote anything but Obama. Sadly, the Republicans look like crap.

@zensky You have got to be kidding me.

First off, he showed his birth certificate during the campaign. He showed the exact same piece of paper anyone applying for one in the state of Hawaii would receive. Suddenly the right-wingers wanted a long hand one.. but the issue itself is a joke… They couldn’t beat him on issues so they tried to make the argument about something as incredibly stupid as that.

Second, I wouldn’t show my birth certificate right away either, because it lends credence to the moronic idea that I’m not a US citizen to begin with.

Third, and most importantly.. His birth mother is a US citizen, which means it doesn’t matter if he was born on Neptune, he is a US citizen.

Your entire comment wreaks of ignorance. You’re sitting here and using the life of a mans father, whom he barely knew by most standards… and his middle name, given to him without any consent of his own…. to declare him un-American. I could draw the parallels between you and the NAZI’s, but I’d like to keep my blood pressure low today.

@zensky You’re trollin’ us, right?

zensky's avatar

Someone must explain trolling to the jellies here once and for all. I have been here for years so, no, I am not a troll. I have not attacked anyone here so no, I am not a troll. I am not a bleeding heart gay liberal – and I am not even American, but I can voice my opinion (or other’s which I may find interesting or stimulating) so I am not a troll.

Second, I wouldn’t show my birth certificate right away either, because it lends credence to the moronic idea that I’m not a US citizen to begin with. No-one cares about you – sorry. You’re not the President. And if he did show it – I guess it was important enough for hm to, right?

And just having a mother who is a citizen is something that will be challeneged and the law even overturned in the future – think anchor babies.

But the fact that his mother is a citizen does not mean he was born in the USA – which is what this about. If you are born in Austria – as Arnold was – to an American mother – you still cannot be President.

If everyone here just sits and nods their little heads – this place would be as dull as Askville or AB – and you all came here, right?

@zensky For goodness sake. Obama showed his official Hawaii Burth Certificate when he was required to. Right wing whackos demanded a long form copy. Hawaii doesn’t issue that/ It stays in their hall of records for safe keeping. What Obama originally showed to the authorities was the official document Hawaii issues, complete with the state seal.

He had to seek a special act of the Hawaii Legislature to eventually show a certified copy of his long form birth certificate, but even that wasn’t enough. The fact his birth was announced at the time in two Honolulu Newspapers was scoffed at. The conspiracy theorists claimed he was born in Kenya or Indonesia—they really weren’t sure which, but they knew it happened. And somehow his Kenyan father knew in August of 1961 that 49 years later he would become president of the United States in 2008, and he secretly placed birth notices in Honolulu Newspapers operating from Kenya. He also somehow penetrated the hospital in Hawaii and the Hall of Records and planted not only phony birth records, but memories of the birth in the hospital staff and Obama’s grand parents. And he managed all this from 10,834 miles from Hawaii.

What white president has ever been subjected to such ludicrous claims? Do you seriously accept any of it?

@ETpro I don’t want to shlep this any further – I was reacting to his comment Taking up some of the most extreme right ideals (birther movement for example) – it was more of an eye-roll than anything else. Again, I don’t vote – I don’ care that much. Obama was the great Black hope – and he sucked at his job. Time to go. Rip the GOP as much as you want, I don’t care – I have never seen a bigger group of idiots in my life. I have watched every debate (I know, I have too much time on my hands) and they are MORONS undeserving of a job at McD’s. Or not morons, like Newt, but seriously scary and reallyn undeserving of being a role model to American children – and a global leader – the biggest global leader. The one that affects my life as well. And many others. So I do have a stake in it – and am interested – despite my not voting.

But you know I lurve ya buddy.

Edit: And somehow his Kenyan father knew in August of 1961 that 49 years later he would become president of the United States in 2008, and he secretly placed birth notices in Honolulu Newspapers operating from Kenya.

So that’s how they did it. Thanks!

Stranger things have happened. Read any good spy novels lately? Spec. Russian “Salt” type theories?

@zensky I wasn’t saying you were a troll, but rather that you might have been, on this one occasion, trolling. Sort of like, I am not a dancer, but there are occasions in which I dance (or, try to, anyway). And it was just because it seemed so out of character for you.

And now, having read up?

Aethelflaed's avatar

@zensky I dunno, you didn’t include the sarcasm tilde, which it seemed like you were going for, but then you had a whole question a couple weeks ago about reminding people of the sarcasm tilde, so I was like “surely, Zen would have used the sarcasm tilde if he was being sarcastic”. Now, I think you might have been being sarcastic, but didn’t use the sarcasm tilde. Or, another option, which is really possible, because it’s late and I’m tired and my brain is kinda fried. Like an egg. Like an egg with sausage on the side.

zensky's avatar

I also said that I don’t use it. Hardly ever. You may read into what I write any way you want. I stand by every syllable.

I took exception to this: Taking up some of the most extreme right ideals (birther movement for example). That’s extreme right wing ideals? Geez. The kid doesn’t know how good he has it if he thinks that is extreme right ideals. Visit the Middle East, Russia, Africa, Asia. Come on. I know Americans think they are the center of the universe and that English is the only language – but sheesh… buy an atlas/almanac/encyclopaedia and read a little wiki.

Again – I have watched EVERY SINGLE DEBATE thus far. I read the NY times daily, Time magazine weekly, and Fox News regularly. Why? Because CNN sucks, is crazy left wing liberal and Israel-bashing, and is no longer available here anyway. Too bad.

I am not Republican, not American, probably wouldn’t vote GOP is I were.

I am justa concerned global citizen under Obama’s current reign. Look for the tilde – you won’t find it under the orange tree.

tedd's avatar

@Aethelflaed No he’s not a troll… He’s just flat out crazy.

@Zensky I sincerely and wholeheartedly disagree that Obama has sucked at his job. Frankly I think he’s done a pretty damn good job. And I am an American citizen, and I did vote for him and will again. So suck it. If the best you can do to argue he’s done a poor job is try to make some BS controversy about a birth certificate, then I think I’m going to win the day very easily.

And for the record, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s mother most definitely is not American. She was Austrian. And you are most definitely a US citizen if one or more of your birth parents is American, regardless of where you were actually born. And lastly, anchor babies is a term applying to children born to illegal immigrants in the US, but on US soil. Not children born to legal US citizens, off US soil. And moreover, anchor babies is simply a term thrown about by xenophobic bigots, who don’t realize that immigration is one of the foundations of the United States. I myself am descended from illegal immigrants from Denmark, Poland, Italy, and Germany. Not a single one of my great great grandparents was legally in this country.

Aethelflaed's avatar

@zensky I think he was saying it was a far-right ideal within American politics. Not within the entire realm of possible politics. And given that the question started off by establishing that we were talking about the American Republican primaries, that doesn’t seem to be too universalizing to me. And within actual America, yeah, everyone who believes in the birther thing falls on the Far Right side. And CNN, for America, is actually more “incompetently moderate” than “crazy left wing liberal”.
