Is there a formula to determine the ideal distance to sit from a TV?

Asked by josie (30934points) September 2nd, 2012

Something like, If X is the diagonal measurement of the TV and Y is the distance from the floor to of the center of the screen on a wall, then Z is the ideal distance for sitting and watching. Is there is a standard that applies here?

For a HDTV – - size of screen in inches divided by twelve times 2.75

42”/12 = 3.5 feet

3.5 ft X 2.75 = 9.625 feet distance from front of HDTV screen that is 42” .

See this rather tedious article. It is dependent on screen size.

Great question, great answers ! I’m glad to find my seating happens to be at a distance just over 2.5 times the diagonal measure of the screen, which looks like the sweet spot according to the articles cited. Just a happy accident.
