Does anyone want to join me in quitting all fried foods?

Asked by _Whitetigress (4378points) July 27th, 2013

I’m wanting to quit all fried foods and just thought it would be nice to have some alliance. So if you’d like to quit with me, that would be awesome! I’d love to try for lifestyle but I want to set a goal of doing it for at least one year. Starting right now.

I’ve long-since cut down on fried foods but I just don’t think I could go totally without my occasional onion rings, fried chicken or chicken fried steak. Where diet is concerned, moderation works better for me than abstinence.

Nonetheless, I’m rooting for you on the sidelines.

I’ve been avoiding fried foods for a year, but since I’ve been going to alot of friends barbecues and such, it’s been particularly tough. But so far I haven’t given in to temptation. To replace french fries, I’ve been using this tasty recipe:

I believe denying yourself of all friend foods is covered in Article 31 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights

“No one shall be subjected to permanent denial of fried foods. Everyone has the right to consume deep fried, artery-clogging absurdities in moderation.”

Nope. Fried calamari accompanies our pizza about once a week. I guess I have some french fries a couple times a month, but that’s about it.

I do not eat fried food except under duress (such as there is nothing else to eat, and I’m starving). I quit for my health. I have undergone a total diet change, and I eat no preservatives at all, no fried food, no frozen packaged food. I have lost 30 lbs so far, and my health is much better.

I live in the southern US, if it doesn’t have butter or it isn’t fried; IT IS NOT food. Just ask any of the restaurants in town.

I can’t if I eat out.

Too late but thanks for asking. I haven’t touched the stuff in years…the memory of heartburn is still similar to PTSD.

I joined you years ago.

I don’t eat it, already.

Oh HELL no. I’m 5’10” 175lbs. 50yrs old and ever been a problem.

But then again, I’m more active than a wet n’ waggy puppy.

Never. Fried foods are way too good to quit.

I probably have eaten fried foods twice in the last year. Once at the county fair (fried green beans) and once at a BBQ restaurant (onion rings). Fried foods just aren’t something that’s regularly in my diet.

It’s pretty easy to avoid fried foods, just don’t make them at home and don’t order them at restaurants.

I can give you some ideas of what to replace the fried foods with if that will help.

If you are at a restaurant and are tempted to order fried chicken, get baked, roasted or grilled chicken instead.

Instead of ordering French fries or onion rings as a side dish, most restaurants have other sides available, and will even accommodate you if you ask for something else, such as fresh fruit. Most restaurants offer cottage cheese, pasta salad, potato salad or a green salad as a side dish for burgers and sandwiches. And don’t forget about baked potatoes, just don’t load them up with sour cream and butter, add non fat yogurt and some chopped chives, or some salsa. Don’t be tempted to load up with other fatty foods (like butter and sour cream) in place of the fried item. Otherwise, you will simply be trading one vice for another vice. Aim to replace un-healthy foods with better foods over the course of your lifetime.

Avoid any restaurants like Long John Silver’s or KFC that are known for fried food. If you are at a restaurant and are tempted by fish and chips, restrain yourself and order grilled fish instead.

If you go to an Asian restaurant, don’t order fried egg rolls, choose the Fresh Spring Rolls or some of the other appetizers, like grilled chicken skewers, barbecued spareribs, Lettuce Wraps, Edamame or Baked Sesame Tofu or Korean Banchan. Avoid fried rice and order either brown rice, or switch to a soup such as egg drop or hot and sour soup. Don’t order tempura.

If you are going to a BBQ or picnic, and you are worried that there will be fried chicken, and potato chips and corn chips, make sure to bring along something that you can enjoy and share with the crowd. Here’s some potluck ideas: Chicken Chili or Chicken Bowtie Pasta Salad or Taco Dip or Greek Seven Layer Dip

If there is a grill at the BBQ you can make Portobello Mushroom Burgers and here’s some info on Healthy Grilling Techniques

At home, go through your pantry and remove any offending items. For snacks you can make your own Microwave Popcorn (avoid those microwave popcorn products from the store, they are loaded with toxic chemicals and fat). Make some Baked Tortilla Chips and serve with Red Salsa or Green Salsa. Instead of fried Buffalo wings, try these Spicy Buffalo Cauliflower Bites. Instead of purchased potato chips, try making these Homemade Potato Chips or these Kale Chips or these Crunchy Chickpeas or these Baked Sweet Potato Fries or these Baked Wonton Chips.

Instead of deep fried mozzarella sticks, try these Baked Mozzarrella Bites. Instead of regular fried tacos, try Flatbread Tacos

Here are some Alternative Cooking Methods to use instead of frying.

Good luck and Bon Apetite!

Yeah I wish I could join you but I can’t remember the last time I had a fried food.

It wasn’t intentional just came slowly with the rest and as most of my fried foods were when I ate out and gluten contamination was a worry for me it must have gone hand and hand with that.

Can’t say I miss them.. Except I loved fried banana ice cream. I guess I could still do fbis at home with almond ice cream. But I am on a sugar detox.

@hearkat Calamari is the devil! (Sooooooo good, right after fried chicken, fried calamari comes to mind next as my all time favorite food, although I like the Filipino way squid is boiled/prepared in its ink with other flavorings)

At the supermarket this afternoon, I had a good look at the prepared fried chicken sold in the deli section. Eating it voluntarily seems hard to understand.

^^ I’ve never actually perused the fried chicken at our grocery store, but they do have an oven exhaust pipe that sends the scent of the chicken wafting into the parking lot. That can be a wee bit tempting. But apparently not tempting enough, because I’ve never eaten it or even looked at it.

No more fried pickles or fried cheese curds when we vacation in Wisconsin? No more Friday fish fry? Are ya nuts? I want to enjoy my fried life, in moderation of course.

You can have my fried catfish when you pull it away from my dead cold tabasco stained fingers.
