Would this be a big deal to you and/or your publisher?

Asked by Aster (20023points) October 12th, 2014

A woman wrote a book that was for sale on amazon; out of print now. On the back cover a word is misspelled. Would you have cared or not and should the publisher have cared?
Nails on a blackboard to me.
I can find the publisher if you’re interested. Thomas something.

Sounds like it was self-published. You get what you pay for.

Thomas Nelson Publishers , Nashville , New York. Could this mean it was self-published? ” It is a subsidiary of HarperCollins, the publishing unit of News Corp.

Their most successful title to date is Heaven Is for Real, which became their first title to sell more than one million ebooks.

If no one caught it during the galley run or the print run it probably was obvious only to a few.

Thomas Nelson is a Christian publishing house that has been around for awhile, their proof readers may just have had an off day.

Just curious…what was misspelled?

Aster's avatar

“Procrastination” was spelled with two s’s.

Ew. Well. Looks like some one procrasstinated on their editing. (How anyone can misspell ANY thing in this day and age is beyond me.)

@Aster Well, Thomas Nelson is certainly a mainstream publisher. In my experience, if a mainstream publisher finds a misspelling on the cover before release, they’ll pulp the run and start over. The likelihood of no one noticing this before release is really small – this is not a common problem. So, perhaps this is one of the few that got through without notice.

Possibly, this is exactly the reason that this edition is out of print. Was there a later edition? If so, I’ll guess that the typo was removed. If there had been no typo, instead of issuing a new edition, they would have reprinted the same edition repeatedly.

I have written countless letters (paper and email) to both publishers and authors about typos in their books.

Only one response ever.

They don’t care.

My daughter has a friend who writes Sherlock Holmes stories. A couple of years ago they sent his manuscript straight to the publisher, bypassing the editor (although they said it was edited). Anyway, the first chapter was unreadable, and the rest of the book was full of errors too. My daughter re-edited his book for him, and they’re re-printing it, for free. In the new edition and in all subsequent books he has named her as his editor.

So the point is, YES it matters. They lost money on this deal.

@elbanditoroso If the book has already shipped to stores, they certainly won’t do anything about it. At that point, it is already far too late.
