Ever feel like you want to elect a jelly of the week?

Asked by JLeslie (65419points) October 21st, 2014 from iPhone

Sometimes I read a few great questions by someone and want to nominate that person for some recognition.

Q’s that make smile. Q’s that ask something I never would think of. Q’s that are funny.

Okay..I nominate @JLeslie for Jelly of the week!

Can we send congratulatory cards?

JK @Here2_4!

Mimishu1995's avatar

@rojo Sure. At least we have to let that person know.

JLeslie's avatar

@Coloma Thanks :). Definitely not me lately. I don’t feel like I have had any great questions in my head for months now.

Mimishu1995's avatar

@JLeslie Sometimes people around you appreciate your things more than you, you can never know :P

Here2_4's avatar

Shouldn’t this be in meta?
@rojo ah, that’s so funny I forgot to laugh.

JLeslie's avatar

Yes, it should be in meta. I flagged it as soon as I created the Q. There was no way to change it to meta in edit.

What’s a week?
Is there a re-start?
Where does it start, and where does it end?

Here2_4's avatar

What time?
What time zone.

johnpowell's avatar

They should start doing the interviews again.

JLeslie's avatar

What interviews?

johnpowell's avatar

http://blog.fluther.com/category/interview/

Around monthly they used to do interviews of active members. I felt it was a good way to learn more about people on the site. It took away some of the anonymity and showed that we are all real people with real problems and things to offer.

Kinda hard to be a dick when you know more about a person than their username.

Mimishu1995's avatar

@johnpowell I’ve seen them before. I’ve seen your interview a little too. I wonder how it feels to see my identity being revealed to the whole site. Still, it was an interesting idea and I wonder why they discontinued it.

johnpowell's avatar

Lisa used to do them and they fired her.

Here2_4's avatar

That was a lot of work!

I think @Here2_4 is doing a great job of being Community Mommy lately!

Coloma's avatar

I think our community would be bereft of brilliance and humor if the Penguin waddled off to new territory.

Aww shucks. (waddle, waddle)

Jelly of the year wins a one year subscription to the jelly of the month club.

Coloma's avatar

^^^ Does that include a Hawaiian vacation too?

Sounds to me like another thing for the mods to keep track of. Bickering is inevitable. And we’re all gonna what, meet here at a certain time on, say Wednesday, and elect a new JOTW? It’s gonna be kinda boring the following 6 days? Who would tally and declare the winner?

dxs's avatar

^^What a killjoy. I think you’re being overly pessimistic.

ibstubro's avatar

^^Realistic. I waited until the discussion slowed before bursting the bubble.

Here2_4's avatar

Nominations could be for the previous week. The mods could pick a time suitable to them for posting. For six days before that, people could be making nominations to be for the previous week. Nominations could close six hours or so before the posting.

Sounds nice in theory. But sounds like a popularity contest. I vote for bringing back the interviews.

JLeslie's avatar

I don’t think it would be a popularity contest.

I like the interview idea also.

A further oppurtunity for those arse licking fb dwellers to big each other up in that hilariously herding manner.

Well, the idea for this question was inspired by a newish jelly who asks interesting questions and has a great sense of humor. The other jelly who came to my mind doesn’t pop up often, she is rather young, and I find her questions refreshing and sweet. So, none of the long term regulars who have been here for years were even in my first thoughts. Although, I am sure there would be a week where I would want to elect one for jelly of the week, if something like that actually existed. Not that I was serious about creating such a thing.

Auggie used to do question of the day or question of the week, I don’t remember which it was. I don’t know if anyone cared about that? Seems like the interviews are the way to go if “they” are inspired to get more information about jellies and do something in addition to jellies just asking and answering.

What about, instead of formal nominations, someone starts a thread in meta which just leaves open for comments and pats on backs? There is a question people can add their happy news to daily. If we feel someone has made a comment too special for one great answer to be sufficient, we could go there and make public how we feel. If someone has been struggling with certain issues, and has a solution they feel very good about, perhaps some who have worked to help them would want to note how brave was that individual, having weathered whatever was so tough.
No single person would be named to excel for any one time period, no weeks would be filled with, “Sure, whoever” because things had been slow?
It would be a positive comments only thread. All sniping moderated.

LOL! I first read ”...eject a jelly of the week!

ibstubro's avatar

You’re not really encouraged to talk about other jellies by name.
Backhanded compliments are nearly impossible to weed out, and I’ve even had members take statements that I intended as a genuine compliment as an insult. There are lines we are required to color within…GA, then a quick PM should do it.

Dutchess_III's avatar

We can talk about them. Just not in our questions or details. Trust me. We can talk about them. And they can talk about us. Trust me!

ibstubro's avatar

Therein lies the problem, @Dutchess_III.

Trust me.

JLeslie's avatar

I haven’t named a jelly, because I know it can be a touchy thing with the mods.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I elect you @JLeslie. Now, just waiting to be modded….
