Do you think I'll get sick?

Asked by livelaughlove21 (15724points) November 14th, 2014 from iPhone

I had an unopened container of cottage cheese in the refrigerator with a sell-by date of October 29. There was no mold, it smelled fine, and the protein shake I put it in tasted normal. I used ½ cup. I didn’t even think about how far past October 29th it actually was until I drank the whole thing.

Should I be alright? If it indeed was bad, what will probably happen? Just an upset stomach or violent vomiting/diarrhea? I’m concerned that I’ll puke at work, which would really suck. How long would the sickness take to kick in after ingestion and about how long would it last?

It’s fine. There’s a lot of leeway built into the sell by/use by dates. Smelled fine, no mold, was sealed, pretty sure no worries.

I don’t think you will get sick. Sell by isn’t an expiration date, and even expiration dates are just a guess. If it smelled fine it’s fine.

Concur, you should be fine. Unopened means it’s okay usually past the sell by date.

It’s fine. If it isn’t discolored and there is no mold, then you’e OK.

The worst that would happen is that you would a serious case of the shits,

Thanks, guys! I feel less anxious now. I already felt like absolute crap before the protein shake, so I didn’t want spoiled dairy to make it even worse.

@elbanditoroso Well, hey, I’m always up for losing a couple of pounds right before weigh-in day!~ :)

@livelaughlove21 – true, but there may be more pleasant ways to accomplish that.

@elbanditoroso Any way you lose 2 lbs in a day is temporary anyway. I’d rather poop it out than puke it oout…or sweat it out, for that matter. You’ll never find me running on a treadmill with my limbs wrapped in a trash bag. A little too much work just to lose weight that will come right back once I re-hydrate.

Little to no chance of sickness, @livelaughlove21

I have a list of how long you can use food safely past ‘the date’, but I can’t find it at the moment.

I usually give milk products 7 days after the expiration date. Has been working out well for me.

How are you feeling now?

BTW, if the container was unopened, it would have bloated if there had been bacteria active inside the container. I refuse to buy or use any fresh food that has expanded its container.

Anecdotal: I have a friend that is probably in her 60’s that is proud of the fact that she will scrape the mold off of sour cream and use it. She’s not dead and presumably never poisoned anyone, but, BLEH!

I do not think you will get sick. If you ask me, there is a bit of a gimmick in that, not only to cover their arse from law suit because someone purchased bad product, they placed the sale by, and exp. date far ahead of when it actually will be bad. Here is something I learned, a lot of stuff they tell you to refrigerate after opening, if you never fridgerate it, it will survive at room temperature. If you open it and put it in the fridge, you will always have to keep it cold, or it will so south. Partly I believe the industry is banking that the moment something gets close to being expired or pass the sale by date; it will get tossed when in actuality it is still eatable. Then they make another sale. If it has been more than 4–6 hours after you ate it and no problems, there was nothing wrong. Unless there is something really wrong where you will barf immediately, it will take about 4–6 hours before it hits your intestines giving you the runs; which is a good indicator if you get the runs, think back to what you ate 4–6 hour prior to the attack.

You will be fine. Definitely nothing wrong with it.

My father was a big hiker. He always kept a small container of fruit flavored yoghurt in his backpack. He never refrigerated it, and sometimes it sat for 2 weeks or so before he used it. At first I was concerned. But apparently it never went bad on him. I tried one once, and it tasted fine.

But I wouldn’t recommend anyone do this, just on general principles.

Update: Didn’t get sick.

Thanks again, everyone!

RocketGuy's avatar

How can you even tell if yogurt is spoiled? Same with sour cream. Aren’t they spoiled milk to begin with?

livelaughlove21's avatar

Yogurt?

Mold is a good indication.

I doubt you’d get sick. Never trust them old expiry dates. If it smelled fine, tasted fine, and looked fine, theres nothing to worry about. Expiry dates aren’t that accurate. If you did get sick, it won’t be anything requiring surgery or that type of stuff, I think just an upset stomach, and vomiting/diarrhea that can be fixed with a simple stomach pill. I think you should get some just in case. BTW you see that yogurt, sour cream, and milk has gone bad when theres little weird colored specks in them.

Oh you didn’t, sorry I was late lols. Well keep it for advice next time.
