And they're off! Which horse name is leading? Do you have a favorite?

Asked by Here2_4 (7152points) January 22nd, 2015

This question is inspired by a thought shared in TJBM #61.
I have been amused by the unique names of race horses several times down through the years. Some make me wonder if the owner ever attended school.
Have you any favorite racehorse names, either some you have heard of, or made up yourself?

I have to ask this question, given the other conversations currently taking place?

If a horse is running a race, is it being exploited?

Lets’s see, naked, being whipped… YES.
C’mon, Dovah, move yeh bloomin’ ass!

The names of thoroughbred race horses, mares, and geldings are approved, registered with, and controlled by The Jockey Club. They have strict rules about length and number of words (which is why you see names with no spaces),

Traditionally a horse is named in part after it’s sire and dam.
Our cutting mare here is the daughter of this guy.

www.waggonerranches.com

Her name is ‘This cats cool.” He also has offspring named ” One cool cat” “One smart lookin’ cat’ , Metallic cat”, and “He bea cat.”

I can’t make up a name without a sire, but one stud we are looking at is “Smoking son of a gun ” sooo…maybe we’ll have ” Smokin’ cat or Smokin’ kitty.” lol

@elbanditoroso Only if all the other horses are easily offended donkeys.

Seabiscuit, sired by Hard Tack, who was sired by the mighty Man O War.

Hardtack is a simple type of cracker or biscuit, made from flour, water, and sometimes salt. Inexpensive and long-lasting, it was and is used for sustenance in the absence of perishable foods, commonly during long sea voyages and military campaigns ... also known as seabiscuits.

So his name reflects back to his grandfather, Man O War.

Most unusual racehorse name, Sarah Jessica Parker…fancy being saddled with that face name.

@Coloma That is so cool! I didn’t know how names were decided. They initially seemed random to me, but after looking at these examples now I get it. Thanks!

@Adagio , did you notice in the article the man in the third photo is holding a square with a triangle painted on it? What is that about?

@Coloma , ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ! I love it! I am so glad you brought up the subject in TJBM. I am having great fun with these answers! I think the announcer in that clip was enjoying himself too.

I think if I were going to name a race horse, it would be either Heynocuttingin, or Thatsallfolks. In the case of the latter, it would sound like a very short race. “Bitchplease is leading and Thatsallfolks.” People would tear up their tickets and turn to go.

Oh so funny! When your link is over, @Coloma, this pops up in the following choices,

Nobody should skip over this link. I laughed too hard, and I may have injured myself.

Coloma's avatar

@Here2_4 OMG! I missed that….hilarious! Everyone HAS to watch @Here2_4 ‘s link above. Too funny!

My horse name of the day is “Muckapoodooboots”. That would be me.
Right now we are on bio hazard alert, with the avian flu out there we are switching boots all day so we don’t bring up any possible contaminated wild duck and goose doo from the pastures and barn area to our pet ducks and geese up by the house. Horse chores boots, waterfowl chores boots, dog walking boots, go to town all spiffy boots. lol

@Here2_4 you are joking of course, that square with the triangle is the play button for the video.

Here2_4's avatar

Yes, joking. Funny seeing it though, the way it happens to appear to be held like that.
@dxs , well then, how apropos! Hee hee.

Strauss's avatar

This is a good primer on racehorse names.

Coloma's avatar

One of our mares just escaped her stall while we were feeding and cleaning tonight. Her new name should be ” Smokin’ and Sparkin’. haha
She was jumping and bucking and all full of herself and her shoes were sparking on the concrete in the breezeway and sending up sparks off the gravel, you could smell SMOKE!
Did you guys know that horse shoes can start fires if they set off a spark on rocks near dry grass?

Strauss's avatar

@Coloma Yeah, that was a concern when we pulled a wagon train from Tucson to Denver and back again. The route was through some of the driest brush in the nation, and we took precautions, like hauling the water wagon to the rear of the train.

Here2_4's avatar

@Yetanotheruser , how old ARE you?

Strauss's avatar

@Here2_4 I was born about 10,000 years ago.

Really, though, I will be 67 in October. The wagon train was part of a program for at-risk youth.

Here2_4's avatar

OH! I had a picture in mind of The Oregon Trail! Ha ha!

Coloma's avatar

I alaways wanted to do something like that, we have a re-inactment ( how do you spell that anyway? haha) here of the wagon train coming down over the Sierras into Placerville CA. every June. Not really a Donner party thing but a replica of old time crossings in the Sierras.

www.hwy50wagontrain.com/wagontrain.html

jaytkay's avatar

a Donner party thing

Probably not a great choice for an authentic reenactment.

Coloma's avatar

@jaytkay LOL very true, I love only about 40–50 miles from the Donner Party zone.

Strauss's avatar

The cafeteria at University of Boulder is named for one of the Donner party survivors, Alferd G Packer.

jaytkay's avatar

Alferd Packer was in a different group, decades later. He was a Colorado cannibal.

The Donner party (woo hoo! PARTY!) was in California.

Dutchess_III's avatar

LOL! I love you guys!
