When was the last time you had a really good PB&J or grilled cheese sandwich?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) May 13th, 2015

I know some people avoid them like the plaque believing they are kid’s food. As a snack a really good PB&J or grilled cheese hits the spot if done right; when the bread is grilled so it is not crunchy or hard and there is enough cheese to make a nice cheesy middle, butter in the bread before grilling helps. Or when the PB&J has the right amount of good creamy peanut butter, not too much to make it dry, but enough to give it that nice hearty peanut taste, and not have need of too much jelly (of course some will debate fruit preservers beat jelly), and with a chilled glass of milk. It has been a good while since I had a really good PB&J or grilled cheese sandwich, when did you last have a really good one?

I never had any of that nonsense.

I’ve never had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I do love grilled cheese, but it also likes to adhere itself to my bum so it’s been quite a while since I ate one. Love a slice of toast with some lovely melted red leicester cheese on it.

Three days ago was the most recent time I ate a cheese toastie, highly unlikely it will be the last time.

I haven’t had either in ages. One thing I hate is bread that’s so soft it turns into basically nothing when you eat sandwiches. So I have become pretty pretentious with my PB&J sandwiches. I’m not a fan of either, but every once in a while I’ll want one.
@Earthbound_Misfit “it also likes to adhere itself to my bum” huh??

@dxs, cheese and bread – not good if you want to manage your weight. A treat rather than a regular food.

Grilled cheese I eat regularly, and it is always good. I have a PB & J about twice a year.

@Earthbound_Misfit Ohh I see what you’re saying now.

I can’t remember either one recently. PB&J, to me, needs some really soft “crap” white bread and I never, ever have that in the house. In order to do it, I’d need to go buy a loaf of crap white bread specifically for the sandwich, and that requires forethought and a desire for this.

If I do make PB&J, I’m into crunchy and texture, so I use crunchy peanut butter, which I have at home. I could do it, it’s just a matter of needing the bread.

Grilled cheese, same thing – white bread loaf which I never have. In a diner or restaurant, I could order it but I just think of it as full of fat an no fiber, so I always gravitate to other things.

What I do like, which is not too common, is cream cheese and jelly. If I do that, which is also “never,” I put walnuts on it, too. People that know me know I love nuts, and I try to get fiber and protein when I can, so this is an opportunity.

A few months back I had a grilled cheese sandwich at my mom’s nursing home. Seriously they make amazing ones!

Last night. I had a grilled cheese made with smoked gouda on rye bread.

Grilled cheese sandwiches are my number one comfort food. I used to eat them regularly—especially after I bought a Foreman grille—but high cholesterol forced me to cut out most of the foods I love. I’ve tried low-fat cheeses but… yuck!

A few months.

Last summer, really. We love to make grilled cheese (the cheese must be melty!) with slices of fresh vine-ripened tomatoes.

@marinelife That’s my favorite recipe; use a nice nutty or whole-grain bread, and a really meltable cheese, add some slices of vine-ripened tomatoes, and a bowl of home-made soup of any flavor makes it a meal!

As for PB&J’s, I still like to have one or two (or maybe three) for lunch on occasion. I’ve recently found a new peanut butter to love. The Bee’s Knees by Peanut Butter & Co®. Spread it on lightly toasted wheat berry bread with some home-made strawberry jam…

I’d better stop now, this is beginning to feel like food porn!

I prefer crunchy peanut butter on wheat berry bread with honey or banana slices. The banana version was last consumed earlier this year.

As for grilled cheese, I just don’t care for the greasy, buttery goodness. A toasted cheddar cheese with mustard and tomatoes is the preference. It’s been at least a year since I’ve had one, but the memory of it lives on.

A week or so ago. I dunno if it still counts as grilled cheese to y’all if you add other ingredients to it, but my boyfriend and I are obsessed with grilled cheese with salami and avocado mash. The avocado mash includes avocado, jalapenos, garlic, onion, honey, lime juice, cilantro, and olive oil. Yuuuuummmmm. Now I’m hungry.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I have one or the other about once a week.

Probably within the last 7 days. Both of those sandwiches are staples at my house.

For the cheese sandwich, I used sourdough bread that was studded with jalapeños, then I buttered the outside of the bread and sprinkled it with Parmesan cheese before grilling. Pretty much any kind of cheese, or combination of cheeses will work, but I usually use cheddar.

You really can’t go wrong with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The most recent one I ate had strawberry preserves. I usually go with whole wheat bread, but I had one last night that was actually PB and J on a rice cake with the addition of some of my homemade pickled carrots. It was divine. Sweet and sour and crunchy.

About 30 some years ago a friend and I were rooting in my almost-bare fridge for something for lunch. We found a jar of strawberry preserves, and I had some peanut butter in the pantry. I had no bread, but I had some tortillas. So we put the PB on one half of the tortilla, put the J on the other half, and rolled it up and ate…PB&J burritos!

I’ve always thought the quesadilla would be the grilled cheese equivalent. Although there are a lot of good recipes out there, and with a little creativity one can come up with about 1000 or so varieties. My go-to recipe is refried beans, mixed with a little seasoned ground beef and salsa, topped with a 4-cheese “Mexican” style blend of shredded cheese, placed under the broiler until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Top with diced onions and serve!

With all this talk of food, are you getting hungry yet?
