Can the gears on my bicycle be fixed?

Asked by Marissa64 (19points) July 23rd, 2008

It keeps slipping out of gear when I ride. It’s an old second hand bike, but I’m wondering if it’s better to just buy a new one.

This problem should be fixed easily. There should be a barrel adjuster that you can turn on the cable that attaches to the rear derailleur. Just give that a turn and you should be in good shape. Adjust as necessary until it is shifting properly.

You might want to have the bike checked out at your local bike shop if your not comfortable messing with your bike. Any reputable bike shop would be able to tell you what’s wrong with your bike and may even fix the problem for free if its a minor dérailleur adjustment. Also check the Chain tension, it could be too loose.

Good Luck!

A bike shop will only charge $5 – $15 for a simple adjustment… it’s often times worthwhile to get a pro to do it as cable tensions and stuff might need to be balanced out.

Jinx, @robhaya! You owe me a Coke!

Thank you all for your help. I’m really not familiar with how bikes work, so I think I’ll take it to a local shop. I’m glad to hear it may be an inexpensive fix.

This could also be a worn chain or cog. If it’s happening in just one gear, that’s probably it. If the chain is worn, it should be replaced.
