How do I automate the backup of my websites?

Asked by dangdang (193points) August 4th, 2008

I currently have to use my FTP client to go and copy all of my website files to my external hard drive as a backup. I was wondering if there was a service out there for making periodic backups of my websites or a way to automate the process?

There are numerous ways to do this. If you’re on a Mac, this is how I would do it:

Create an Automator workflow or (heaven forbid) AppleScript or—if you’re super clever—a shell script that downloads all the files over FTP to a new folder on your hard drive. Set a crontab up that executes this workflow periodically.
