What will happen if schedule of taking tablet is changed?

Asked by imrainmaker (8380points) April 4th, 2017

This might sound elementary school question to you.) I was wondering what will happen if I take tables prescribed to be taken in the afternoon and night in the morning / afternoon? Before / after meal doesn’t matter as per doc. So what might be the reason to take them at that particular time? What can go wrong if the schedule is changed?

Nothing or worst case you die !

Take your meds as prescribed.

The might have to do with your energy levels at times of day, or need to be taken in time proximity, and the second one will make you drowsy. Do you take another medication in the morning that might make you drowsy?

Ask your pharmacist, they are experts in drug interactions and effects. And follow the directions now, don’t risk finding out the hard way, even if you have done it your way for a couple days.

I have never been overly concerned with it. I try to take meds on schedule when I have to but if I miss one I just take it as soon as I remember

For instance if a med says every eight hours and I start at 7 am that would mean another one at 3 pm then one at 11 pm. I would try to maintain but if after a couple of days I miss the afternoon one and don’t take it until 5 pm then I would still take the next .at 11 pm and continue on as before. However, if I missed the 11 pm pill, I would probably not bother to wake up and just take the 7 am one on schedule.

A Hindi Proverb will answer your question-
“Jiska kam usi ko sajhe, aur kare to danda baj” meaning
The work suits in the hands of the one skilled to do it. If someone else does it, he’s sure to mess it up….

If you’ve been taking medication at a certain time, you should try and stick with that schedule. I don’t believe any harm will come to you if you miss one or two times but it shouldn’t be a habit. If you feel any side effects of the change in schedule, you should see your doctor right away.

It depends on the pill. There is not one perfect answer.

Some medicines only work for 24 hours, and for those you really do want to keep to a pretty good schedule, because you need them to be at peak levels all day.

Other medicines have a longer carryover effect – you take a pill for several weeks and your body adapts to the presence of the medicine over time. In that case, the exact timing is less important than making sure you have it once a day.

It depends on the med.

@elbanditoroso along with medicine, the personal health also plays important part. There are medicines which are recommended by doctors not to half and some people they say to take full.

Did you ask the doctor why/if the time of day matters?

I know that for some of my dad’s medications, they are not recommended for night-time use as they act as diuretics. They’re best used in the morning.

Other medications need to be taken at times that don’t interfere with medications that have specific timelines.

Talk to the doctor and to the pharmacist – and make sure they know all medications you are using, prescription or otherwise.

^^ Nope..I didn’t. I’m taking them as prescribed only but was just curious about the schedule.

I don’t think it causes much difference but that also depends on the drug due to its effect.

Like when a moodswing pill asked to be taken in the morning it gets to keep the mood uplifted the entire time, but if it gets taken in the night it still does the job but you are already asleep and you don’t need much upliftment when sleeping.
