How much money would it take you to go crazy with wealth?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24468points) September 11th, 2017

To lose touch with reality. I can do that for free so maybe how much money does it take to corrupt you? Humor welcome.

I honestly don’t think that it would.

Some people can’t be corrupted by money, you know. But I’m not one of them. If you are prepared to offer me a bribe, I’m prepared to accept it.

Patty_Melt's avatar

Do you mean having it, or being made an offer?
Having big money would not corrupt me, but the temptation of gaining a large sum might.

I don’t think I would be corrupted by having any amount of money. I can think of all sorts of good things to do with it. I’d figure what I need to support myself, my creative work, my family and worthy friends, and some other desirable things, and then what best to do with the rest for various causes.

As for what you’d have to offer me to corrupt me into doing stuff, it depends on what you want me to do compared to what redeeming other stuff I can do with what you’re offering, and whether I’m also being threatened or not.

If I had tons of money, I would be squeaky clean, and just glad I don’t have to stress how many days until I have money again.

How much does it cost to get my brain out of the vat?

About $1,000 at this point.

I think you’re right, you can go crazy with too much as well as with not enough. When I was dead broke, I thought about money all the time, like nonstop. That was nuts. I’ve never had to worry the other way.

Above “not enough” is “enough,” and above “enough” is “comfortable margin.” Above that, it’s all about the same, until you get to a level where your money owns you and you have to pay somebody to take care of it for you. That’s “too much.” If I were ever close to that, I hope I would know it and avert it before it made me crazy. I would not want to be that woman in Massachusetts who won $485 million in the lottery.

Right now I’d be more than happy with “comfortable margin.” But I’d probably still worry even if I had that.

Well I’m a money hoarder so I don’t think it would have any impact on me. I may be more self-indulgent, but not crazy.

I used to have money. Not crazy wealthy but very comfortable for years until the recession wiped me out. Money didn’t change me, I am not a corruptible type. Money buys freedom and that is all. Freedom to be more of who you already are. If you’re an asshole to begin with you’ll just be an asshole with a lot of money. If you’re a grounded, decent person you will remain a grounded and decent person.

I wouldn’t lose touch with reality per se, but I think $20 million might make me lose touch with any sort of money worry. If I had $3 million I would still watch carefully what I spend and be concerned I wouldn’t have enough for retirement, but at $20 million or more I would feel comfortable to spend without much concern. Not that is ever be hugely wasteful.

Define “crazy”?

Like, my $600 million Powerball plan is the same as my $5 million lottery plan, with a lot more random anonymous philanthropism.

I can’t imagine any amount making me “go crazy.” I think that’s a genetic thing and my parents were very level headed about money.
I can imagine wanting to buy up tracts of land, though . I can imagine wanting to have an unlisted number. I can’t stand telemarketers or con men.
I don’t think buying a new house or having one built exactly the way you want it then having it decorated with antiques is crazy (I hope). Buying a ton of gold jewelry would make me feel wasteful. But having a catered Thanksgiving dinner would be fun, huh? I was EXHAUSTED last year.

Dutchess_III's avatar

If I had the money I’d build a comfortable house, but I’d spend most of the money on out door stuff, like hiking trails, waterfalls that the kids could play behind, a patio that slides back to reveal a pool, stuff like that.

I already question my sanity. I would love to have a lot of money. It would probably make me seem less crazy…
