What can I do with my old phone other than sell it?

Asked by CrusoeStudio (155points) January 28th, 2018

Just got a new phone a few days ago and my old cracked android is just laying around. I know I could sell it or recycle it, but with such an impressive piece of technology I want to keep it in use so long as I have it. The phone has no service. I looked online a bit, but none of the options were appealing. Are there any suggestions that people could give me of useful or productive uses of this old phone that aren’t the basic ‘use it as a security camera’ or whatever.

Our PD gives them to low income seniors for emergency calls, neat program. Poor mans life alert.

There is also a program that gives them to battered women for emergency calls.

I’ll give it to a battered female elder

My daughter gave her iPhone to her 1 year old to use as a chew toy. Sounds bizarre, but the 1 year old can tell the difference between real and toy phones, and she constantly chews on my daughter’s phone.

@chyna beat me to it. That’s what I do with my old phones. I think there is a sorted recycling bin system at my local BestBuy.

You could do like I do and stick them in a drawer.

I suppose some day I will throw them all away but for now they just pile up.

If you’re interested, get out a screwdriver and a small hammer and take the thing apart. See what’s inside and how it all works.

I give my old ones to a battered woman’s shelter. Even without service they can still call 911.

You can donate or recycle your used phone.
