What are your thoughts on the email controversy?

Asked by rojo (24179points) March 6th, 2018

Was/is it stupid to use a private email account for government business? Harmless or an attempt to hide things you don’t want made public?

Was this action by Clinton, sorry, Pence stupid or conniving?

I am sure the right wing lemmings sheeple mind slaves will soon crawl out of the woodwork to tell you how Pence is somehow “different”.

Seems like everyone is doing it. Lock him up!

It’s an act of someone who has something to hide. It’s a way of subverting F.O.I. requests, investigations and other scrutiny. It causes potential serious security breaches. It’s not harmless or an easy mistake to make, it’s blatant corruption. Does not matter if it is Clinton or Pence, I don’t buy the “I did not know” excuse.

I thought all serious government business was now done on Twitter.

No matter who does it, it’s wrong. Even on a local level we are instructed that all official business is via one political email. No excuses higher up.

If you judge Pence you gotta judge Clinton as well. Both are bad people in my opinion.

I think whatever the rule is, we need to be consistent. If it was wrong for Clinton, it is wrong for Pence. If Pence gets a pass then Clinton does too.

My thinking: it is wrong, and should be punished.

My feeling is that it is worth investigating. I have seen some things that could separate this from Hillary, but not necessarily. Remember, Hillary was not in trouble because she used a private email server. Many believe that is foolishness, but not illegal in and of itself. She was in trouble because she was passing classified materials over that private account. It was the mishandling of classified materials that was the big no-no. Then it moves to the transparency of each to be considered. When Hillary was accused, she repeatedly denied using it for business related materials. When that was proven false, she then moved to denying that any classified materials had been sent over the private server. When that was questioned, she tried claiming that she had looked and turned over all emails that had to do with official business. When that was proven false….you get the picture. Now contrast that with Pence. When questioned, he promptly turned over 13 boxes of emails that he had. He stated he understood the official rules about keeping emails and had abided by it. Could he be lying? Absolutely. Could there be more that would show wrongdoing? Yep. But right out of the gate, the two feel different. And there really aren’t any actual accusations of him mishandling classified materials.
Now…to @SergeantQueen‘s point, if the left really wants to pursue this and wants to crucify Pence, they need to be willing to toss Hillary away as well. Because if I was Pence and it came out I mishandled classified materials, I would just claim I was careless and didn’t have the intent of mishandling them. Isn’t that good enough these days?

@seawulf575 Yes, unfortunately, claiming that is good enough these days.

It’s a non-issue that could be cleared up pretty easily. It’s hilarious that it’s an AOL account, but you can’t exactly control what email address others use for you just you can’t control what number they call you on. It’s great if the outcome is a more competent class of politician, but I can’t even get government folks to use an online form right and you’d be surprised who gets to handle government communication between recipients.

I do love the “13 boxes of emails” though. Because emails come in… boxes?

“Hey, we misused digital communication, here’s some printouts to prove it’s all good.”

These people decide what I get to do legally on the internet. SAD! ~

^^ Hey, don’t dis AOL. Sometimes we get stuck in and are happy in a rut.

I still maintain a Hotmail address and how long has Microsoft been trying to do away with that?

But if you got an email from mikepence69@aol.com requesting government documents you’d probably laugh at someone poor attempt and delete it.

It’s the type of thing I would immediately dismiss as a laughably bad fake.

The use of private email addresses was not a big issue and the law relating to it was not clear and changed several times in recent years. Trump decided to make it a big issue and so it is now a big issue for Pence as well. Providing emails in boxes these days amounts to obstruction of justice in itself. Lock him up I say!
