To restore SOME color, can you dye your hair without stripping/bleaching it first?

Asked by Yellowdog (12216points) June 15th, 2018

My hair is still mostly blond—it was just starting to go brown or what is called “mousy” on females—some years back, when white and grey started dominating, due to age.

I am going through the interviewing/vetting process for an associate Professor position —so I do not want to look pure blond as would come with dying my hair a solid color. But I am wanting some of the blond from a bottle to adhere. I dyed my hair successfully in the past when I was going brown but I do not want to look as blond as I did then, The only way I know to do this is not to dye it or strip the original color.

Yes, I know I am a little vain. But I want to fit in with young adults at the local arts community and coffee houses as I did fifteen or so years ago—while keeping some semblance of maturity.

I don’t know your skill in doing it yourself, but some color could be streaked, no need to bleach.

Just FYI, it’s called “mousy” on males, too.

You’d get a better answer asking a hair professional, and you wouldn’t have to pay as much as a mousy female does.

Just for Men sandy blonde
Wonder how this would look? For $20.00, it would be worth a try.

You can always go darker without bleaching. It’s going lighter that’s a problem.

If it matters that much to you, I think you should trust your head to someone who knows what they’re doing. Believe me, if you’re concerned about your appearance enough to drive you to this, you do not want to risk a bad dye job.

Simplest would probably be just dye your hair light brown or dark blonde. I use a temporary usually—Natural Instincts hair color. Washes out in about a month if you have greys. https://www.clairol.com/en-US/products/hair-color/product/natural-instincts?shadeSKU=381519003035

You can get low-lights, as opposed to highlights to tone down the color a little, but that’s much harder to do by yourself. You can try yourself, or with a friend, and then if you don’t like how the streaks work out, you can just dye over everything and go for the all one color look. You can use the same bottle you tried the streaks with if there is enough dye left.

If you can afford it, and you want some sort of “lights” then getting it done by a professionals might be the best answer.

@chyna I find it interesting the Just for Men is more expensive than most hair color marketed to women in the drug store. I wonder if there is dye for multiple uses? Short hair usually needs to dyed more often. I don’t know anything about the Just for Men product.

Maybe just use a shampoo with a toner in it. It will correct. And if you do not like it wash it out.
If meeting is important ..go to a professional to get professional look , especially for such an important interview.
