How does the Chrome browser get updated?

Asked by 2davidc8 (10189points) July 4th, 2018

I am being forced to abandon the Internet Explorer browser because many sites that I visit no longer support it, so it tends to freeze up a lot. And it’s slow.
I have also been using Chrome for some time, and I’m going to move everything over to Chrome.
Now, I remember that when Microsoft was supporting IE, I would be notified of updates from time to time. Same for Firefox. Then I’d have to go through the process of installing the latest version, just like the newest iOS on my phone.
But I’ve never heard of updating Chrome. Does it happen automagically?

My son works on Chrome mobile. If now one else knows, I can e-mail him the question.

Yes, automatically. It checks once upon starting a session, and if it sees the need for an update, it queues it. Then, when your browser is idle, it installs it, without any fuss. Doesn’t tell you.

Very convenient.

Yes, I actually just looked at the top bar and there was a red icon on the the top right that told me that there was an update that would load upon relaunching Chrome. I did and it did.

Why not use Firefox? Using a browser made by the biggest advertising/tracking company in the world seems foolish.

@johnpowell I do plan to use Firefox also. I used it several years ago, but what I did not like about it was that I had to manually install updates once or twice every week! Has this changed? Can the update be automatic, like described above for Chrome?

@janbb @elbanditoroso Thanks for the info.

No, in Firefox you have to manually update it. It is a button you press and it does it for you. You don’t have to visit a site and download something and run a installer. Seriously, it will let you know there is a update and then you click a few things and Firefox restarts and restores your session.

I’m super jaded.. I consider Chrome malware.

If you install Firefox please install this.

It will make the internet so much faster and better.

@johnpowell What’s the best place to get Firefox from?

johnpowell's avatar

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/

Are we talking desktop or mobile?

The link above should work for both.

Both. Thanks, @johnpowell!!

I have been using Firefox for about 15 years. Mozilla has sane defaults.

When my mom got out of prison she got a Windows 2000PRO box and was constantly compromised to the point I was doing a re-install once a month. She was using IE 6.

I told her it was 50 bucks to fix her shit unless she switched to Firefox. She did and I never got got money from her again.

I completely agree with @johnpowell . i use Firefox with an ad and tracker blocker. It works great.
I will try the blocker he recommended above.

I use Chrome with an AdBlocker and tracker and have great success with that.
