At what size would you draw the line at a commissioned portrait of a loved one or yourself?

Asked by lucillelucillelucille (34325points) March 2nd, 2020

I was asked to paint a 4×6 portrait of an acquaintance’s husband.
Not inches but feet.
Where would one hang that behemoth?

No. Just no.
I really like my dog, but an 8×10 would be big enough. Probably more like a 4×6. Inches.

15 square (or cubic) feet would be my limit.
For my depiction.
To be placed at all entry roads to my hometown.
Rebbel, South-Holland, Netherlands.

@chyna -I agree.
Maybe the commission size is in direct proportion to how much love one has for the person/pet. LOL

@rebbel -I have seen the Billboards here in the US! Love that shirt!

Question… Is this a full body thing with them sitting in a throne? Or just a big ass painting of their head?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@johnpowell -Lol! BAH big-ass head…thone. this is what I will think of every time I see him now
She wanted a ¾ body- life size painting of her husband.
I know him from art events.
She added that he used to look like Robert Redford.
Why she said that idk. Temptation perhaps??
It isn’t going to work.

@KNOWITALL -LOL!
In a figure illustration class I once took, the final was a nude self portrait. Full size.
At that point, the class was pretty used to nudity but there were a few that didn’t show up for the presentation. XD I wonder why….
To this day, I have no idea whatever happened to that portrait.
I might run into it at a gun range someday

@lucillelucillelucille It was probably @ucme and it’s on his wall…..hahahaha~

@KNOWITALL -He does play darts….

I would never have a portrait of myself, that’s what mirrors are for lol
As for my Mrs…she’s larger the life but anything too big would lack class.

Darth_Algar's avatar

For myself nothing short of 8’x10’ will be deemed sufficient. For someone else….eh, whatever.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Darth_Algar -Where would this be hung?

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ucme How can I imagine you as a young dandy if you don’t have at least one large portrait of yourself? haha

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@KNOWITALL and a separate one for the perm? :D

KNOWITALL's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille Or side by sides of him and Mrs. Ucme, that would be hilarious, nude or not….haha!

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@KNOWITALL -As the focal point as soon as you walk in the house! TA-DA! XD

I’ve thought about doing this many times. It would matter the size of the wall, especially the height of the ceiling.

In my Tarpon Springs house I would have wanted along the lines of 4×6. In my current house maybe 2.5×4.

I’ve wanted to do a painting, mosaic, or mural of my husband with his race car too. That would be huge. Maybe 6X5. If it was a mural than a whole wall, so even bigger. Hmmmm. Maybe do a smaller painting and then blow up a copy like a poster so I have the original and a lightweight wall covering.

@lucillelucillelucille I just keep thinking of Big Bang Theory and Amy’s oil of her and Penny together. She paid good money for that!

ucme's avatar

@KNOWITALL & yes, you @lucillelucillelucille You two know me far too well :D

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@JLeslie -The wall space is definitely something to consider.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@KNOWITALL -I saw that episode. XD

Perhaps she has a spot for it, something where that size would look perfect.

Darth_Algar's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille

In the living room, of course. Where all visitors may bask in its glory.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Patty_Melt On the ceiling above the bed??
@Darth_Algar – That is what I was thinking.
