Are there still any retro video arcade game centers in Japan remaining?

Asked by Nick88 (61points) September 18th, 2021

The reason I ask this is because I hear many have been closed down and figuratively destroyed in large part due to the covid pandemic. Before covid struck, video arcades in Japan were still thriving whereas arcades everywhere else, the US in particular are seen by many as a thing of the past at best and a nothing more than a useless bygone fantasy at worst. As a video arcade game fan myself being familiar with Japanese culture, respectful and all, will I be disillusioned if I ever came to Japan for vacation sometime in the future if and whenever this crisis gets under control? I was wanting to go to Tokyo, and Osaka, as well as some cool districts in those cities such as Shinjuku, and Akihabara just to name a couple.

I have never been to Japan, but I can tell you that “disillusioned” is a strong word. I don’t really think arcade games will be destroyed completely. But if they are, I would be sad if I were you, but not to the point of “disillusioned”. It would be sad that something good has to go, but no one has control over that, and that isn’t the only thing Japan has to offer. If I were you, I would try to move on and enjoy other things the country has to offer, such as the exotic scenery, traditional rituals or the quirky gashapon machines and bookstores.

The reason I ask that is because I hear many game centers had closed down permanently, and been destroyed in large part because of the Covid pandemic. I just wondered if there were any left standing anywhere in Japan. I’d still go to Japan to see all kinds of other beautiful, and exotic things as well as old video game consoles and things of that nature. There was nothing offensive or unreasonable about that question. Why do you have to get on to my case just because I like to find out about things? My questions about anything to do with Japan may not be terribly conventional, but I believe they are appropriate.

@Nick88 why are you so defensive? Did I say anything about your question being anything at all? I was simply commenting about your usage of the word “disillusioned”.
