Have you seen any good movies lately?

I’m in the middle of watching The Holdovers with Paul Giamatti. I really like it. It’s touching and a little funny, although the NY Times describes it as a funny movie, to me the humor is more in little touches than being a primary aspect.

I’m also watching Feud: Capote vs The Swans. I like it. The names are all names I used to hear when I was little and I’d see them in the gossip columns – Babe Paley, etc. (Yes, I was a voracious reader and would read the NY Times and New York magazine, and anything I could get my hands on)

Have you seen any good movies lately?

I rewatched Starship Troopers recently. Still one of the greats.
I also rewatched Red Heat. That one was a dud.

I saw The Beekeeper a couple weeks ago, and Ordinary Angels last Sunday. Both were rainy day matinees.

Beekeeper was a great action film. Ordinary Angels was a tearjerker. Glad i saw both.

Sure, I’ve seen some great films on Netflix and Prime. I really loved The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart. The Edge of War has not left my mind completely since I watched it months ago. Where The Crawdads Sing, The Old Guard, Band of Brothers, The Unforgivable, and The Impossible were all very good,

Best of new movies would be Oppenheimer. But Netflix has a panoply of choices each month (of older stuff) so I have been indulging on some of those.

The best film I’ve seen recently was Whiplash.

I’ve also watched a reputedly good film that is in fact objectively a piece of disjointed and tedious crap with bad editing, bad dialogue, bad cinematography, terrible intrusive music, and terrible storytelling. This film has been mentioned in the thread, and will no doubt win loads of Oscars.

I saw the first Dune movie in IMAX a couple weeks ago. I have tickets to see the second one in IMAX tomorrow. Spectacular. With these being glaring exceptions, I have not seen other good movies in a while.

I recently saw All Of Us Strangers. Excellent movie, poignant and bittersweet.

Rewatched The Crow for the 84th time. I love it so much. The soundtrack is excellent.

I also saw Dinner in the colonies, as recommended by Mike and Jay. Very good movie.

@Kropotkin But there is nothing objective in film criticism.

I enjoyed Dune Part 2, The Bee Keeper, Past Lives, and Killers Of The Flower Moon.
My favorite movie of last year was Cocaine Bear.
My bet for Oscar’s best pic is Oppenheimer.

I saw “The Pig the Snake and the Pigeon” a couple of days ago. It is an excellent Taiwanese film with subtitles.

I recently watched “The Iron Claw”. Utterly heartbreaking but extremely well made. I think Zac Efron was snubbed for the Oscar, I thought he had a good chance of actually winning

Loved Oppenheimer but I can see why people. I personally loved the intrusive music, it was meant to artistically portray Oppenheimer’s inner turmoil.

I just returned from watching Dune 2. It was very good! I watched the first part yesterday in bed while it was pouring rain outside. I’ve invested almost six hours in the series this weekend.

Some other great films I’ve seen recently are Wonka, Godzilla Minus One, Barbie and Asteroid City.
