Can bill collectors call you all day long on Sundays?

Asked by sweetdreams (38points) November 17th, 2008

I owe (like a lot of others) credit cards which are way past due. A few of the collection calls I’m getting are on Sundays and they call 3–4 times a day (even after I talk to them) Ironically, I am the collection person for a local furniture store and our rules from our legal dept state no calls on sundays or holidays.

By law, in my state , if you send a creditor a certified letter, stating that you don’t want them contacting you on the phone, they can only contact you by mail. Check with your state. Hope that will help.

I guess it depends on the company. They will call what ever time of day. It’s the most annoying thing especailly when you already talked to them and they keep calling. I’ve had calls in the past while I was sleeping. It came to a point where I asked to speak to their surpervisor..I told them if you want to call and bother me fine, but you better call at a more appropriate time.

I was thinking between the hours of 8am-6pm. While I was at work, so I don’t have to answer. The calls eventually stopped. Sometimes you have to raise your voice for people to hear you. Good luck.

Thanks mzgator & babygalll! I looked up the Fair
Debt Collection Act and it states that “A debt collector may not call the consumer at any time or on any particular day if he has credible information from the consumer or elsewhere that it is inconvenient.” After being informed of that if they call a second time on your “no call day” they are in violation of the fair debt act.
So I have written to each of them and stated no calls on Sundays. thanks a lot for your input!!!

they are not suppose to in our state either but the do. i just tell them that “it is sunday and you are not suppose to be calling me on this day so please call back on monday and hang up.”

i find it’s actually not a person, it’s a robo-message where it says “there is an important call for you. Please hold on” and then they put you on hold. i just hang up. however, once they wake you up it all doesn’t matter.

So far since I yelled at the few that called, they’ve all but stopped.
