Mac/Apple users: What program do you use for your tasks/to-do list funtions?

Asked by mikey7183 (338points) December 8th, 2008

I am currently a PC user who uses Microsoft Outlook and a BlackBerry – I am thinking about switching to an Apple with an iPhone but wonder about how task management works with Apple and your experience with to-do lists, etc.

Things. Though, we just switched over our Fluther task lists to Hiveminder—it looks like a horrible site, but they have the coolest IM integration, plus delegation between team members!

Hopefully Things will get things like that when they finally release the API and get their collaboration stuff figured out.

Another vote for Things!

And since you mentioned that you’re considering switching your BlackBerry to an iPhone, there’s also an iPhone version of Things that syncs with the desktop version.

I use iCal & Mail’s to-do lists, waiting on iPhone integration.

I like the simple approach of Stickies (on mac) and Notes (on iPhone), but find iCal and Mail to have good functinality for it too.

I use Things as well. Does the job brilliantly for me.

So you are saying desktop Things does not sync up with the iPhone? – is there any to-do list program that syncs your computer with the iPhone? I am kind of surprised that things does not have this functionality for syncing

Things Desktop does sync with the iPhone app.

Things is great, a pro version of this that I use (GTD protocol) is Omnigroup’s OmniFocus (has a great iPhone app that syncs OTA).

If you’re familiar with the Getting Things Done philosophy, OmniFocus and Things are excellent programs for that system. If you don’t know what GTD is though, it might seem a little esoteric.

The closest equivalent to Outlook is Entourage which is a PIM and email program part of the Office 2008 suite for the Mac.

iCal is Apple’s calendaring program that includes a (simple) task manager and the program is included with every Mac.

Check out The Missing Sync for Blackberry as there’s no native sync support with Macs and Blackberries. The Missing Sync will sync to dos from iCal. (Many other task managers can also sync to iCal which will go to Missing Sync, which will go to your Blackberry.

I just capture to dos quickly with TextEdit and then slot them properly into OmniFocus.

Thanks for all this info – So what is the difference between OmniFocus and Things?

damien's avatar

There’s a lot of differences. OmniFocus has more options and settings wheras Things focuses on simplicity and ease-of-use. Things is currently free (because it’s still in beta) and OmniFocus has a free trial, so download ‘em both and give them both a spin. See which suits you best.

I’m actually see it as the opposite – I think Things has a more powerful tagging feature but find it less clear and approachable. I like OmniFocus because it presented in a more straightforward way to me. But like Damien said, they both have trials, I suspect you’ll know which one you like almost immediately.

I second artificialard’s answer:
I use OnmiFocus for all of my task management and it kicks much a$$. It works great on the desktop and it works great on the iPhone.

Another vote for Things. Syncs perfectly with iPhone. Things is deceptively simple on the surface, powerful underneath. I expect it will overtake OmniFocus both in terms of features and in terms of market share…
