What is your opinion on tattoos and piercings (either on you or on someone else)?

Asked by Dansedescygnes (2881points) March 26th, 2009

I don’t really like them. On me or on someone else. A small earring on a guy probably isn’t going to bother me too much; neither is a small tattoo. But I tend to just prefer someone without them. And I don’t see myself ever getting either one.

I don’t know, I’m kind of turned on by the idea of a guy with nothing “artificial” on his body.

As long as the tattoo carries a meaning for the person, I’m cool with it. That is, only if the meaning IS meaningful.

Lefty_the_space_monkey's avatar

I know it’s trendy, and I’m ashamed, but septum piercings are really great, I feel, as are singular lip piercings.

Don’t like snake bites.

Kind of ambivalent about most everything else.

DrasticDreamer's avatar

I reserve judgment until I actually see the person. Some people look fantastic with tattoos and piercings, some people look weird. I do tend to be drawn to guys with at least some tattoos and piercings, though. Why? I have no idea.

Personally, I have a tattoo (and will probably get at least one more) and I have some piercings, too.

Dansedescygnes's avatar

@DrasticDreamer

Well, yeah, I’m not judging people based on this. It’s just a repeated pattern I’ve noticed. I tend to be drawn to guys with no piercings and tattoos.

3or4monsters's avatar

I tend not to notice either, unless your tattoo is from Nintendo or an illustration from a Shell Silverstein poem, and your jewelry is something I’d like to covet. :) Beyond that, they are just decorations, like the color of your shirt, or your makeup.

DrasticDreamer's avatar

@Dansedescygnes Yeah, I didn’t mean to imply you were actually judging the character of a person based on whether or not they had tattoos. Sorry, I worded it weird! :) What I meant was (personally) I wait to judge the appearance of tattoos and piercings until I see what they look like on someone – ‘cause they do look odd on some people.

Amoebic's avatar

It’s a non-issue unless for me unless it’s (what I consider to be) excessive – full body tattoos or over several dozen piercings, then I have to wonder what the story is there.

SuperMouse's avatar

I love my tattoos. I have one on the outside of each ankle and they both have a special significance to me. I have to say that when it comes to piercings I think anything other than ears and nose are unattractive.

@3or4monsters, I saw a girl with Link tattooed on her forearm last week. She was really impressed that I knew who it was. Although I admit it is only because my kids are huge fans of Zelda.

VzzBzz's avatar

I don’t care for the look of piercings/guages but it’s almost odd to see someone without them.
As for tattoos, most are poorly done and cheesey (my own included) but again, it’s getting rare to see people who aren’t inked.

Dansedescygnes's avatar

@VzzBzz

And that makes me sad. When is the popularity going to die down already?

Oh well, the three guys I’m attracted to the most right now don’t have anything.

galileogirl's avatar

This won’t be very popular so don’t bother to tell me I’m wrong but it is my opinion developed over time

I think piercings and tattoos are a form of cutting and have psychological undertones relating to suppressed emotions.

VzzBzz's avatar

@VzzBzz: The good thing I can tell you from experience is that when you meet someone you begin to click with and care for, any ink or piercings or whatever… those things don’t stand out any longer.

Dansedescygnes's avatar

@VzzBzz

Oh, I know. The guy I like the most right now (and I mean, I really really like him) is, I’m not trying to be mean, a little…weird looking. Doesn’t bother me at all. Luckily he doesn’t have any “modifications” on him.

Randy's avatar

I consider tattoos and artwork that is hung on your body instead of you walls. I enjoy it. I also enjoy piercings. I have snake bites and my ears are stretched to a small size. I my opinion, body modifications are like anything else, in decent classy amounts, they can be great but there is a line that can be crossed where it becomes a little ridiculous.

drClaw's avatar

I tend to think along the same lines as @DrasticDreamer, some people look good with them, some people its hardly noticeable, and others look weird. I personally have both and have never once regretted either my piercings or tattoos.

tinyfaery's avatar

I couldn’t care less. I have 8 tattoos and will definitely be getting more. I also have a piercing and my ears are a guage 4. Guess I’m defective and into self-mutilation. @galileogirl must be a professional psychotherapist. Oh, wait…

elijah's avatar

I love tattoos as long as they’re well done and original. Mine are all pretty large. I don’t really like tribal (unless you’re actually in a tribe) or flash. I haaaate arm bands and tramp stamps. I understand that we all make mistakes when we are young, but I really really hate them. And armbands that don’t even go all the way around?! Gah!
I love most piercings, except eyebrow and tongue. I’ve had a few different ones, now I only have my Monroe and ears.
@tinyfaery don’t get angry. Let us freaks band together!

tinyfaery's avatar

I’m not angry, I just happened to have worked with teens with suicide ideation who were into self-mutilation. No connection. Sorry.

elijah's avatar

@tinyfaery I understand :)

I am fine with most tattoos.

If someone covers their limbs or even more of their body, I think it tends to be a distraction in social interaction, and I tend to wonder what it means.

I really hate tongue piercings, because it makes people talk funny. Other than that, I don’t care.

One more: I don’t care much for nose piercings, because it makes me think of a cow with a ring. I also think it might be a disadvantage in a self-defense situation.

On myself – Not on your tintype, sonny! I am already funny-looking enough.

On someone else: It’s a free country.

On my children: Not until you’re eighteen, buster.

casheroo's avatar

@galileogirl I’ve never heard that theory before. Do you think people enjoy the pain?? I personally hate getting tattoos, but I like having them. The pain is unbearable to me, but I sit through it for the end result.

To answer the OP, I don’t judge people with tattoos or piercings. I usually like them, since tattoos and piercings can be done tastefully. I’ve had many piercings and quite a few tattoos, I find it to be an expensive hobby of mine :)

hug_of_war's avatar

My ears are pierced, but I’m ulttra-sensitive to nickel, so I never wear earrings. I only like ear piercings on women, and I don’t like multiples. I kind of like the look of belly piercings on women but I’m too fat for that on top of the allergy. I don’t like piercings anywhere else.

I don’t like tattooss at all. I couldn’t date someone with a tattoo because I prefer natural skin and find tattoos very disstracting from the body’s natural beauty. Though I do enjoy looking at tattoos for art’s sake. I’m uncomfortable with permanence.

Darwin's avatar

Dentists love tongue piercings because it results in so much needed dentistry when teeth get chipped.

MacBean's avatar

I love body mods. All sorts. On anybody.

Dansedescygnes's avatar

“I don’t like tattoos at all. I couldn’t date someone with a tattoo because I prefer natural skin and find tattoos very distracting from the body’s natural beauty.”

See, that’s exactly what my mindset is. I just really like the body’s natural look.

I can’t stand dealing with a clerk with a tongue piercing. For one thing many have trouble enunciating their words. Nothing like looking at an infected eyebrow piecing. Hoo boy!

Mr_M's avatar

I find the tramp stamp really hot on a woman.

essieness's avatar

I have lots of tattoos and I love all of them. I also have a few piercings and I love those too.

@Mr_M How convenient that my comment comes right after yours…

Mr_M's avatar

(That’s not my style. I prefer when the lady’s comment comes first.)

jo_with_no_space's avatar

I have a few piercings and want more. I love how they look on me, I do like an aspect of the pain somehow. I also love how they look on other people, and I think that when they’re done well and in accordance with the right features, they can do a great service to somebody’s appearance.

Tattoos can look beautiful on others, when they’re done artistically and in colour as opposed to that bluish ink on older tattoos. For me personally, I can’t see myself getting one.

Myndecho's avatar

Tattoos are normally tatty and cheap and I personally think they look vulgar. Ear rings are not that bad as long as it looks decent.
:D I’ve just read your details on this question.

Randy's avatar

@Myndecho, Tattoo’s are cheap? Try telling that to my artist! She, and my wallet, would not agree with that at all.

Myndecho's avatar

@Randy
They look cheap.
It seemed like I’ve been copying Domenic today but I personally would go out with a girl or guy with tattoos.

kayysamm's avatar

If a tattoo had a meaning and was worth looking at, I find it very attractive. If it’s a cheap stupid tattoo that you can tell they didnt take the time to think about it then its gross to me.

Piercings are hot no matter how I look at them as long as they look right on the person and that person doesn’t look like a metal face.

I find gauged ears a extreme turn on :)
