Is there pain after a talonavicular fusion has healed?

Asked by gorich (16points) September 6th, 2009

I have constant pain from a falling arch and arthritis in my right foot. I would like to hear from someone who has had a talonavicular fushion. What is it like after the surgery has healed? how long does it take to heal? Is there any pain once it is healed? I was very active before this started so what I am asking is there life after foot fusion?

They keep trying to do fusion on me, but I’m opposed to it. Of course, I’m only 25. Its supposed to limit pain, but it also limits a lot of mobility.

What do your problems stem from? Mine are from tarsal coalition.

Have just had my second fusion. First talonavicular fusion was done fours years ago and apart from stiffness in my foot and ankle i have no real pain. Am just in the rehab stage of my second fusion on the opposite foot and at present I have discomfort and swelling following 7 weeks in a non weight bearing cast and 4 weeks in a knee to toe boot. I am a PE teacher and following my first fusion I have had no problems but have not played competitive hockey since the operation as advised because of the way the bones are fused. However I still go to the gym and teach trampolining so there is life after a fusion. In total the recovery time is approx 1 year for the swelling to stop. I am only 37 and had my first fusion at 33 due to osteo arthritis. Finally prior to fusion I did have cortisone injections but these provided little to no relief so if you have tried everything then I would say go for it.

I had a fusion done on my foot in December of 2009, it is now coming up on 4 months post-op and it feels dramatically better when I wake up. If you follow the process of recovery exactly, you will have benefits. The lack of mobility is not anything that is going to hamper overall life style. No,i will not be able to compete at a D1 level of football anymore, but I will be able to exercise, jog, swim, etc. without pain. I was really hesitant before the surgery, but now I am very content with the result thus far. The right foot is much better than it was prior. Had I not got it done it would only deteriorate more over time.
