Asked by shewhowalksonland (17points) September 15th, 2009

I am in chronic pain and really depressed. I have IBD or IBS depending on who you ASK…but the issue is chronic pain in my abdomen… secondarily head to toe. MY GI DR. changed me from asacol 800 mg every 12 hours, lortrab 7.5/500 prn and entocort 6mg once a day to 400 mg asacol every 12 hours, 3mg entocort every 24 hours and 15 mg morphine sulfate 2 times a day…. I got switched from morphine back to vicodin by and ER DR.because my GI DR is out of town and I was in indescribable pain… but after a while I got really hopeless… and after 24mg hydocodone… more then 7 glasses of alcolole, I chewed 2 15mg tabs of morphine and swallowed 2 more… am I going to die? I know i need help and am depressed… But in the short term… will I die? I just want to get help and better my small family

Please help me tonight!

[ Edit ] Take Nikipedia’s advice (below), or call 911 if you’re in the U.S.

Is anyone with you?

You may be in extremely serious danger. Please don’t take any chances. I think your best bet is to call the national Poison Control hotline at 1–800-222–1222. They can help advise you from there.

my blood pressure is good and my heart rate is actually high (104)... I KNOW YOU GUYS ARE probably right… but I have a therapy appointment at 3 today and i don’t want to be locked up…I have seen the inside of county and it was scary, useless and dark…. they did nothing but sit me next to/lock me up with 2 schizo’s and a paranoid schizo… i cried for 4 hours… they told me I was fine and denied me pain meds… my chronic pain IS VERY real. i am lucid… tried to induce vomiting but failed… so my husband is going to watch me….
THANK YOU FOR THE HELP though… u guys may be right… but i’m not ready

A morphine overdose kills pretty fast – respiratory failure starts quite quickly, so I doubt that you are looking at a fatal dose – but you can have many other problems besides dying. Get medical assistance.

I’m just wondering whether the Fluther administrators should add 1 extra line before questions can be asked:

What’s the motivation for your question?
– Solve a problem: Your question may have one or more definitive answers.
– Start a thoughtful discussion: Your question is hypothetical.
In case of urgent medical problems call 911, your local doctor or nearest hospital emergency department

I’ve noticed there are quite a few questions when the people in need should not wait for Flutherites to answer. Is it because millions of people in the US don’t have health insurance?

@mattbrowne, I think so much of our culture is being predicated on being the exception to the rule, that when you suspect that you are not beating the odds, you need confirmation that something bad is really happening to you, and that it’s really serious.

In this case, poster seems to have misplaced faith in her ability to self-medicate, and too much ego to take care of the situation properly. She also seems have not been educated in managing IBD, as drinking alcohol WORSENS THE SYMPTOMS. Hopefully, she will beat the odds and not end up dead or brain-damaged.

For me, fear of permanent vegetative state is a good motivator not to do or to do certain things.

@shewhowalksonland: you shouldn’t faff around on Fluther for something this serious. as for psych wards, I have said here before and will say again that I loathe psychiatry. I don’t trust it. I don’t think it will help. if you do end up there, let it serve as a warning to do you, a motivator, to not put yourself and your family through this.

one final thing… if you die, your family can’t undo that. so please choose to live.

@shewhowalksonland – Move to Nueces County. My son loves the county psych unit. They never make him do anything except watch TV, eat and sleep, and they continue all his prescribed meds just fine.

And if you OD, always call 911, and stay away from the booze!

I know how wrong I was… and I know booze is bad for IBD and IBS… I did everything wrong last night. It’s not an excuse… but I do feel I have been failed by the medical system. I have been in pain for 4 years and have seen up wards of 25 drs and am still in pain. It has intensified over the last two weeks but it’s like pulling teeth to get help.

Long story short I should have called 911… but I am nit dead or brain dead and am going to therapy today… and following up with my doctor…

I know this isn’t the right forum… but I was just trying to reach out…

YES… I am back off the booze…

Thanks everyone… even the harsher words I needed to hear.

I hope things start to turn around for you soon…in the meantime, be careful and take good care of yourself.

@shewhowalksonland Thanks for the update, my best thoughts and hopes for good luck are with you.

@shewhowalksonland – It took me close to ten years to get doctors to a) believe I was in pain, and b) finally figure out why. In the meantime they almost killed my kidneys with pain meds. I have learned how to be better able to stand up for myself in the face of medical egos so it isn’t as big a problem any longer.

If you are where you can see it, there is a program called Mystery Diagnosis which deals with two folks every episode who have dealt with strange, rare or simply unrelieved health problems for years. One woman had to suffer for 50 years before she finally found a doctor who knew enough to run the right tests. The show may help you to know that you are not alone. Doctors do not have all the answers, and, being only human and sometimes jaded, at times decide to stop looking.

Good luck with your health problems. And while Fluther may not be the right forum for asking for help with an emergency, there are a lot of folks who have been through a lot of things, so you just might find a long-term answer here. Plus, in these days of instant medical knowledge, the internet can really be your friend if you need to research your own symptoms.

IBD is really hard to get under control, but you really can do it, and get it where it needs to be. There are a lot of resources to be had, including doctor referrals, dietary help, clinical trial programs, etc. through the CCFA. My father had Crohns for a number of years, and bowel disease runs on both sides of my family (both grandmothers died of cancer of the intestine.)

I’m sorry I was so mean.

It’s ok Darwin… I really screwed up on so many levels… I usually don’t drink… It was just a really bad night… I am now in the process of getting new dr.s I mean… I’m on my 600th opinion… but it’s really time to find the right one.

YarnLady: I have watched that show a few times… that reminds me it reallt is time to push for a pain clinic.

Thanks for the thoughts and tips guys…
