Not much in the large scope, but my husband and son would lose their caregiver and so would probably have to be institutionalized.

And five dogs and six cats would need homes.

Someone would need to feed and brush my cat.

Also my fiance might be sad.

The world would not be worse off. The world is indifferent to my existence. I have contributed nothing to the world. Nothing that seems to have made any difference, anyway.

A couple of people might care, but most wouldn’t notice any change. They’d be sad, but it wouldn’t materially affect their lives. I think my wife and children would be worse off, though.

I don’t find it helpful to think about things like this. They make me feel insignificant and sad. I know that nothing really matters in the long run, and we don’t matter at all, any more, once we die. The premise here seems to be that a life isn’t really worth much unless a lot of people in the world care.

It’s hard for me to reject that notion, even though I know it’s an unhelpful standard to judge myself by. Ah well. It makes me sad. That’s nice. I’m gonna go eat lunch.

I seriously doubt it.

@daloon I would be sad…

See, I disagree with the notion that life is only worth something if a lot of people in the world care. It’s not about numbers as far as I’m concerned.

And furthermore, it’s difficult to answer this question without sounding arrogant. The world would be worse off because I am a positive force. And my family and friends would be very saddened.

It does not make me feel insignificant.

I would probably have increased the level of crazy, sarcasm, and fun.. ie: i would have improved the quality of life =P
In other words, it would be boring without me
i am hoping so

Facade's avatar

It wouldn’t be.
My boyfriend and parents would be sad though.

If I died today, 125 kids’ grades could be affected, the sale of a house could fall through, somebody will inherit some money and Goodwill will receive some nice donations. Dropping a lot of little pebbles in the pond could very well affect many lives in positive and negative ways.

If I HAD contributed to the betterment of the world, then I could happily fade away knowing that I already had made the world a better place, and my passing would not be a tragedy. Due to time constraints, fate, lousy personal finances, lethargy etc. I have, as of today, yet to make my august contributions to the world. However, I am (reasonably) confident that my contributions will be legion and beneficial all-around. Therefore, it would be a tragedy if my untimely death would deprive the world of glorious deeds to come.

Well personally I don’t think I have that much to offer, though of course you never know. I also don’t think it’s a question of contribution either, because whatever you have contributed stays, it’s what you may still have to give that counts. This is why we get so upset when younger people die, especially if they’ve shown some special talent and ability that was promising for the future.

So in my case I’m taking a plane in a few hours, and if it crashes I’m pretty sure some of my friends and family would be sad. Above all my daughter, but she already misses me as it is, and she’d only find out years from now. It might actually make her pain more bearable, I don’t know. But I’m pretty sure I still have a lot to offer her.

Other than that, my director at the theatre would need to find a last-minute replacement, and my dad would not be able to count on my help anymore, but he’s been working a lot himself recently. But let’s face it, if I were to die suddenly, this would be as good a time as any. Honestly, I don’t think it would be such a great disaster after all.

maybe I’ll go on to make some huge physics discovery that changes the way we see the universe, but other than the minimal chance that ever happens, probably not a whole lot…

I doubt the world would ‘care’ even if every single human on the face of the earth would die today. While many people are affected by the death of friends and relatives, I don’t see it as any different than a tree falling in the forest.

Everyone else would have to eat my share of the tofu and drink my share of the beer…there would be more soy-filled drunks wandering around, and I don’t think that’s good.

Part of the world will be worse off and the other part won’t be. It all evens out in the end.

Why? I just a have a way with some people that makes their lives better and the others don’t pay attention. Their loss I suppose.
