Is there a reason for the name Linda being popular among Asian-Americans?

Asked by mps (7points) October 5th, 2009

My daughter, Linda, noticed that all the other people named Linda who are under 50 seem to be Asian. Is there a reason for the name Linda being popular among Asian-Americans?

I’m not sure, but the only person I know with the name Linda who is not an older adult happens to be Asian, but I’m not sure if this is a regular occurrence or not.

Maybe Rinda sounds like a common asian name.

That’s funny, the one person I know named Linda is Asian.

I have a friend named Linda under 50…honestly, I think she’s white but she’s got to be mixed with something. I never asked. But, she is definitely not asian.

My sister’s name is Linda and she is under 50. not Asian

Other than that, I think @oratio answered this best.

I don’t know any Asians named Linda. I know one named Fanny…

isn’t the name Linda supposed to mean ‘pretty’ in spanish? I know several Lindas, and all of them are blonde, white, and not quite fifty.

Actually, it is not the most popular name for Asian girls. That would be Emily. In fact, Linda does not even break the top 10 according to this data from 2007:

” New York City Hispanic Black White Asian
Girls
1 Ashley Ashley Kayla Sarah Emily
2 Emily Emily Madison Rachel Sophia
3 Isabella Isabella Jada Ava Chloe
4 Sarah Mia Brianna Sophia Tiffany
5 Kayla Brianna Nevaeh Julia Ashley
6 Sophia Samantha Jayla Esther Jessica
7 Mia Jennifer Taylor Isabella Michelle
8 Madison Melanie Ashley Chaya Sarah
9 Brianna (tied) Angelina* Destiny Olivia Rachel
10 Samantha (tied) Kimberly* Gabrielle Emma Angela*

Nicole* ”

City Room offers up this possible explanation for the popularity of Linda being behind the curve for Asians when compared to Americans:

“One thing City Room will note. South Asian-Americans tend to have transliterated South Asian names — Amit, Sunil, Priya, Sunjay — that they use in both cultures. Whereas Korean-Americans and Chinese-Americans are more likely to have a European-rooted Western name and a separate Korean or Chinese name (which may or may not appear on official documents).

But the funny thing is that those Anglo baby names selected by Asian immigrants tend to lag the mainstream by a few decades because of when the parents tend to take their inspiration from their peers — who are people born 20 or 30 years earlier.”

I don’t know any Asians named Linda, which is odd in that I am married to a man of Asian heritage who has a large family. I do know a Lynne, and several Lins, but no Lindas. I know lots of Lilys, though.

I like the City Room explanation. My daughter is in her 20s and her Asian-American contemporaries seem to have names which were popular in general the 1950s.
