Web design and graphics courses---What would you recommend?

Asked by DarlingRhadamanthus (11273points) February 25th, 2010

Hi…

I am considering taking some web design courses including graphic design. I am not going to undertake a formal course of study or anything, so I was wondering (for those of you who are familiar with this subject) what programs would I need to learn as basics/ necessary (like Dreamweaver?) for both web design and graphics. Also what would be recommended programs (though not necessary)?

I am not a techie——don’t know html, etc so I would be starting at the beginning.

Thanks so much!

I went to school to study journalism, and found that most of the jobs I could get were not in editorial but in design and production. So I spent some time concentrating on design studies, and there I discovered that one thing that set me apart from all the other design students was an ability to write pithily.

Therefore, while you are in design classes, I suggest you also take a critical thinking class (many assignments in critical thinking are about advertising) and a news writing class (where learning to write headlines translates to crafting punchy taglines) and English 101, so your design jobs don’t wind up as laughingstock with misused apostrophes.

I would suggest finding a reputable college that is excellent in its field. University courses are generally quite a bit more theoretical. You want to get down and dirty fast.
Never had to take any, self taught – born with a puter. But, from what I’ve seen, college kids get further faster in web design and graphic arts.

I’m confused, so you’re not looking for a formal course… then check out lynda.com
Yes, you can do most everything with dreamweaver and photoshop. For graphic design you’ll need Illustrator. Mostly – done.

If you want to start on your own, try http://www.w3schools.com/

The price is definitely right, and it’s the definitive source. The lesson language is a bit arcane. You have to learn some new programmer’s context meanings for common English words, but the Internet is a great resource for looking up trade talk.

I am a graphic design major and the main programs that you need to know are in design which is were you organize everything most of the time, photoshop and illustrator. If you want to learn web design then I would suggest to start by the basics with tex edit, writing your own pages first and then get into dreamweaver and all the programs. Right now I’m using a book that has helped me a lot and is very easy to understand. Go to headfirstlounge.com
there you will find a list of books that they have, look at html and css. It’s a really good book.
Let me know how it works for you.

May be Photoshop, Illustrator for both. Flash, HTML, CSS (, XML), Dreamweaver for web design; in addition to this either or both vbscript and java script.
