Is drinking RO water bad if you have an adequate mineral rich diet?

Asked by Ltryptophan (12091points) April 17th, 2010

I have a decent RO(reverse osmosis) set up. It makes very clean crisp water, absolutely void of minerals. I know drinking it by itself will purportedly rid me of minerals that I need if I don’t get enouh in my diet. Will it do anything else that is harmful?

I noticed that I got a runny nose after drinking from my SS water bottle that I had freshly cleaned with hot soapy water. This is a different issue, but should I boil this thing before I drink from it each day? Is soap and scrubbing enough? Water afficionados please answer away!

I don’t quite understand whether you want to rid yourself of minerals or make sure you have enough of the right ones in your diet.

@lillycoyote I don’t want to harm myself. I have adequate minerals in my diet. Are their any other reasons not to drink RO?

Unless you are drinking untreated water, I don’t understand why you would go through so much trouble. There are naturally so many contaminates in our food and air that I doubt a little unboiled water is going to make a difference. I try to be rid of some of the chloride that is in our water but we need a exposure to germs or our body won’t build a natural resistance. I would assume you can obtain most minerals in our vegetation since it gets nourished with rain. But I am unclear how much we need.

In some settings, reverse osmosis water is all that is available. I have never heard of it hurting anyone who maintains their mineral balance through other means.

@justmesuzanne Ha! I wonder if that’s how they came up with the name.

If you’re getting minerals another way, the only other thing I can think is your teeth might suffer from lack of fluoride. Probably not that big of a deal, particularly if you brush attentively (with a toothpaste containing fluoride, of course).

As for the other thing, the washing your water bottle.. I would think scrubbing it with soap and water would be sufficient. Not sure why you would need to boil it.

Is eating regular foods going to get me enough minerals? I also take vitamins…

It’s fine as long as you eat well, take a multivitamin, and be sure your kids get fluoride treatments from the dentist.
