Why does my face not tan as nicely as the rest of me?

Asked by ChocolateReigns (5624points) June 5th, 2010

By the end of the summer, I am usually really tan. But my face always stays very pale. I’ve never gotten sunburn in my life. I always tan instead. It’s pretty nice. But on my face, I have very light freckles that just get darker in the summer. I like how the freckles and paler skin looks, but I look mis-matched! It’s weird! And by the way, I really don’t care about how I look or what people think of me, I just am tired of being mismatched. I probably won’t do anything about it, I’d just like to know why this is.

Freckled faces look younger longer…as do faces that are not overly tanned. I’d say you are a fortunate girl. Unless you’re running around naked, nobody is going to notice your being mis-matched. Enjoy your beautiful self.

Are you positive you never got sunburned as a child?
I had a dermatologist tell me I must have gotten sun poisoning on my face when I was younger..my face rarely tans like the rest of my body.

what is sun poisoning?

I think you probably have sun damage from years past. Are you by any chance using a lotion or makeup on your face that has SPF? In fact foundation, even without SPF, will block a tan to some extent.

Why not try a fake tan on your face? I too have freckles on my face, and as you said, they just get darker and darker, particularly around my nose. I just use a tanning lotion, which gradually gives you a nice colour.

@JLeslie I have only had sunscreen on for a total of about 5 hours in my life.

@ChocolateReigns And you don’t use any lotion or cream on your face? Or, makeup? If not then I would guess it is sun damage, since your face is in the sun more than any other part of your body. My husband almost never uses sunblock, certainly didn’t at all the first 30 years of his life, until I started insisting he did on his nose at least sometimes, and although he still tans on is face, it is not as even as the rest of his body anymore. Same with his sister. I am guessing you have darker skin if you never need to use suntan lotion, and I wanted to point out that people with darker skin have more trouble ridding themselves of dark marks from the sun, so you might want to be more careful as you get older.

I was a real sun bunny when I was young and I’m going to tell you what I learned. Stay the hell out of the sun unless you are wearing sun screen. Right now your skin takes the abuse and doesn’t make you pay for it, when you hit your fifties it collects it’s fee and it charges interest.
