What is your favorite internet meme?

Asked by andrew (16543points) March 17th, 2008

I have to admit, I’m totally captivated by what sweeps the collective internet consciousness. I could pretend that it has to do with the semiotics of virtual representation, but let’s be frank: memes are amazing. What are your faves?

I’ll start. I have a special fondness for the granddaddy of them all, All Your Base Are Belong To Us and inexplicable japanese videos: Yatta and this.

All Your Base… I remember you. The first reminder that flash on a iMac G3 sucked balls. It still sucks.

I agree with @johnpowell: Rickrolling is killer.

Oh, and tubgirl was a blight.

My favorites are from the gaming subculture – Leroy Jenkins & the cake is a lie

I was also a big fan of All Your Base Are Belong to Us. I still have a soft spot for it…

@squirbel: Can you explain the cake is a lie to me? The only reference I’ve seen is from a hypertext “rules of life” site.

It comes from a game called Portal. The plot has you, the female protagonist, wake up in an underground test facility. Today is your test day, and you are provided instructions and snark from a disembodied voice over the P.A. system. This voice promises you cake as a reward should you finish successfully… But by the time you get to the end, you realize that…

…the cake is a lie.

This explanation doesn’t do the experience justice, but the phrase caught on and spread like wildfire :)
