What are your favorite 2-food pairings?

Asked by tom_g (16638points) April 24th, 2013

We all know that there is something amazing that happens when you combine chocolate with peanut butter. Apple and peanut butter is also amazing, as well as apple with cheese.

But everyone seems to have some combos that aren’t as widely known about or appreciated. When I was a kid, a visit to McDonald’s was not complete without dipping french fries in a coffee milkshake. (If you have just vomited on your keyboard, I understand.)

What two foods do you combine?

When I was a kid, I loved putting A-1 sauce on my mashed potatoes.

prime rib/horseradish sauce

Cheese and anything
Bacon and anything

@marinelife Amen to that but I would refine it to melted cheese on anything!

knockwurst and vegetarian baked beans
pickled herring and sour cream
ginger ale and Welsh’s grape juice
tuna salad sandwich with provolone cheese
fresh or frozen strawberries or blueberries with heavy cream
fried chicken and waffles
Dr. Pepper, Coca Cola or root beer with vanilla ice cream

Fried chicken and waffles??! You Texas Pachyderms are weird creatures!

Curly Wurly & Angel Delight.

Pachy's avatar

@janbb, it’s a combo I discovered only last year and apparently quite traditional. I thought it sounded weird too, but one taste and I was hooked!

Ooh that reminds me – I love an ice cream soda with Coke and coffee ice cream! Now I want one.

Thinly sliced apple with thinly sliced cheese.

Cream cheese and strawberry preserves.

Wendy’s fries dipped in a Frosty.

I smash peas into my mashed potatoes.

Really, mashed potatoes and anything.

Gorgonzola Dolce with roasted beets. And if in a salad, add some chopped toasted Walnuts. In a pinch, I will use regular Gorgonzola, but it’s just not as heavenly without the Dolce.

i know it sounds really weird but its absolutely drlicious. Believe it or not, it’s known as a classic pairing; just ask a real chef.

Liptons powdered Tomato Soup and Sour Cream makes a great party dip if you want a changeup for the Onion Soup one. Not everyone links onions.

A can of those tiny tender Petit Pois peas drained and mixed with Sour Cream.

There’s nothing better on a hot summer day when you can’t stand the thought of cooking. Obviously I always have a few cans in the fridge for when the mood hits.

Baked potatoes and sweet potatoes mixed half and half tastes better than either alone.

Oh, I almost forgot the best one !

If you want an awesome but really really easy dessert that’s even worthy for serving to guests you can make a killer Chocolate Mousse by mixing a good quality Cocoa powder with a container of Sour Cream.

You can also use a whisk or electric beaters to beat some more air into it if you want to lighten it up and get really fancy but I only do that for company. I like it fine just thoroughly mixed together for myself.

But I can’t emphasize this enough; it’s imperative that you MUST USE a high quality cocoa powder. None of that Nestles or Swiss Miss type of crap,

I use Penzeys Mint Chocolate mix. Addictive. Also great in Summer.

@Buttonstc That peas and sour cream thing sounds awesome! I’ll have to do that.

Buttonstc's avatar

Yeah, can you tell I REALLY like Sour Cream ?

Blackberry's avatar

Gouda and club crackers.

downtide's avatar

Pesto pasta sauce on toast.

Zucchini and chopped walnuts sauteed in olive oil. It’s the only way to serve zucchini._well, maybe not the ONLY way. It’s my FAVORITE way.

You all listed my favorites already. Haven’t had a Porterhouse or any other beef for months. Way off the budget down in the Caribbean. You’re killing me.with your big, thick prime rib with horseradish sauce. I’m dying.

Stone Crab claws dipped in mustard sauce. Or just butta.

Or just fresh new potatoes dripping in butter, sprinkled with chopped parsely and a glass of good Chardonnay
on a warm night
on a terrace,
high on a cliff
overlooking the Pacific
under a bright moon.
a breeze whispering in the redwoods behind
and the waves crashing below

Since when does McDonalds have coffee milkshakes?

I used to dip my fries in my frosty at Wendy’s, before they ruined their French fry recipe.

Blondesjon's avatar

Beer and anything salty/savory.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Cottage cheese and sunflower seeds.

@livelaughlove21: “Since when does McDonalds have coffee milkshakes?”

In Massachusetts in the 70s and early 80s.
And yes, the Wendy’s Frosty and fries was also amazing.

jonsblond's avatar

Cheese and bacon. If you give me a cheese spread it better have bacon in it!

SadieMartinPaul's avatar

Beans and rice.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@tom_g Oh, well that explains it. I wasn’t born yet.

Bellatrix's avatar

Cheese and onion.
Dark chocolate and orange.

ucme's avatar

@Bellatrix Terry’s…no it’s mine, tap it unwrap it.

Bellatrix's avatar

I love Terry’s Chocolate Oranges. I love After Eight mints too. And those chocolate stick things…no idea what they’re called.

ucme's avatar

Matchstix, the wife likes the mint flavoured variety.
