What are the TV shows you remember as being the funniest?

Asked by ucme (50047points) September 5th, 2013

Yeah, I copied off the movie version, so what, I can if I want to =0}
Besides, I may have asked this before myself, vague recollection.
Anyway, fave comedy shows past/present…go!

A Bit Of Fry and Laurie
Monty Pythons Flying Circus
The Kids in the Hall
... and for totally unrelated reasons, The 700 Club

ucme's avatar

I’m guessing The 700 Club (whatever that is) comes under the unintentionally funny bracket.

tom_g's avatar

Monty Python’s Flying Circus is the funniest. That’s not debatable.

But I remember being so disappointed when Police Squad was cancelled.

zenvelo's avatar

Funny old ones:

Dick Van Dyke
Hogans Heroes
Leave it to Beaver

Seek's avatar

@tom_g no lie, I’ve ended friendships because people didn’t appreciate Python.

tom_g's avatar

^ Completely reasonable. Somehow, I happened to marry someone who doesn’t “get” Python. If things ever go sour in the marriage, I will blame this fact.

picante's avatar

The Carol Burnett Show, especially when Tim Conway and Harvey Korman were unable to keep straight faces.

As a child, I found the Stooges, all three of them, to be hilarious. I Love Lucy was another long-standing laugh riot for me.

Seek's avatar

Totally understandable.

ucme's avatar

Don’t know if anyone has seen Ripping Yarns, written by & starring Michael Palin/Terry Jones.
Was kind of a Python spin-off made in the mid-seventies, very funny.

naynay86's avatar

Friends!! Me and my boyfriend just watched all the seasons all over again…they earlier seasons, however, were the best!

Seek's avatar

Huh! No I haven’t. I have seen “How to Irritate People” with John, Graham, and Michael, though. That had me rolling.

Friends is hilarious, if you were an American in the 1990s. If you weren’t, 90% of the jokes are irrelevant to you.

ucme's avatar

Friends went right over my head, as do the vast majority of American “comedies.”
Let me see, there musta been a funny show, one time at least, got it…Mork & Mindy :D

downtide's avatar

Monty Python
Not the Nine O’Clock News
Spitting Image
The Young Ones

I agree with A Bit of Fry and Laurie, and I liked Fawlty Towers.

@tom_g “Somehow, I happened to marry someone who doesn’t “get” Python. ” How is this even possible? How does it happen? Did she choose not to like it? Does she understand the humor just not appreciate it? What in the world…?

tom_g's avatar

@rojo: “How is this even possible?”

I don’t know. She apparently had avoided any exposure during her teens and early twenties. By the time we met (23), I tried a couple of times and she didn’t seem to understand what was going on, and couldn’t get over the laugh track.
Now that I think about it, I am calling a divorce attorney.

The Larry Sanders Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Seinfeld. There were many others I loved but are three of my all-time faves.

It was, is and always will be all in the writing, and these three featured some of the best writing ever.

Seek's avatar

Oh! Duh.

How could I forget my favorite Kiwis, Flight of the Conchords?

muppetish's avatar

I adore many of the shows mentioned already, but would also like to quietly add The Muppet Show to the list. It’s British and deserves lurve too.

OpryLeigh's avatar

My all time favourite comedy was Jam and Jerusalem. The BBC obviously didn’t agree with me because they only allowed it to run for three series but I personally thought it was some of Jennifer Saunders finest writing. I have all three series on DVD and can watch them over and over again without getting bored, which is more than I can say for some of the more obvious classics like Friends and Only Fools and Horses!

OpryLeigh's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr and @tom_g Michael Palin is one of my all time favourite people.

downtide's avatar

You can tell who is British and who is American just from reading the answers here.

ucme's avatar

@downtide This is true, although most right minded yanks with taste agree Brit-coms are far superior shows than their own homegrown stuff.
This is just fact :)

tom_g's avatar

@ucme – I don’t know much about British sitcoms other than what I was exposed to when I was in high school through MTV. There was a brief moment that they would show Flying Circus, The Young Ones, and occasionally that other thing (Fistful of Travelers Checks). That stuff was so amazing, I was convinced that everything coming out that crazy country must be as brilliant. I hear that’s not the case, however.

mrentropy's avatar

@downtide, I’m quite American and my favorite shows are Red Dwarf, Black Adder, Fawlty Towers, Coupling, The Young Ones, Kenny Everett’s Video Show, Benny Hill, Father Ted, and probably a couple of others I can’t think of at the moment.

ucme's avatar

@tom_g Not sure what point you’re trying to make, if any, but expecting “everything” to be top class is a little ambitious to say the least.
Of course there’s some crap, Terry & June, Are You Being Served & Hi-De-Hi just a selection of turkeys, but the diamonds far outway the rough, always have.

tom_g's avatar

@ucme: “Not sure what point you’re trying to make, if any”

I generally don’t make any points. No good ones, anyway.

ucme's avatar

So maybe you were just thinking aloud then?

tom_g's avatar

^^ I don’t “think” either.

ucme's avatar

So what drove you to write that post?

tom_g's avatar

A desire for you to ask, “So what drove you to write that post?”

ucme's avatar

Theory confirmed, user states entirely invalid opinion & throws toys outta bed when shot down in flames…happy trails.

Kardamom's avatar

@ucme and @jordym84 Just finished a marathon of watching Doc Martin. I laughed, I cried and I fell head over heels in love with Martin Clunes. So much so, that I created a minor crises on @Adirondackwannabe’s lurve party yesterday, because everyone thought I had died of a heart attack. I had started to reply to Addy, then my mom asked if I wanted to do a marathon of Doc Martin, so I just left the Fluther tab open (note to self: don’t do that again). It kept saying on the thread that I was crafting a response, only I didn’t get back to the thread until 24 hours later. I feel like such a ninny. But ohhhhhhhh that Doc Martin!

I definitely think the Brits do TV better than the Americans. They have better story lines, better details, and they don’t care whether or not they have super-model casts, they use real-looking people (like Martin Clunes). We just watched the first episode of Ripper Street. But I promise I will not leave my tabs open (or my robe) when I’m out in public, including on Fluther. Hee Hee.

But I do have one question. When the F is Sherlock coming back on. I’m having palpitations just thinking about Benedict Cumberbatch.

Seek's avatar

Yeah! And what about the next installment of Broadchurch? I needs me some new Ten-inch eye candy

jordym84's avatar

@Kardamom I adore that show!! It never fails to make me laugh.

Headhurts's avatar

@Kardamom I didn’t realise you guys get so much of our TV over there.

Seek's avatar

@Headhurts we get BBC America, which has the really popular stuff, the rest we hunt for. I request DVD’s from the local library. If they don’t have something and a few people request it, they’ll buy it. They get most BBC and Acorn Media stuff now. love me some Midsomer Murders. Murder mysteries in general, really.

Headhurts's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr Love Midsomer Murders. Do you get Morse?

OpryLeigh's avatar

@Kardamom I’m not afraid to admit that I quite fancy Martin Clunes. He’s not a classic beauty but there’s something about him!

Headhurts's avatar

@Leanne1986 I quite fancy Philip Glenister in Life on Mars, so authoritative

Seek's avatar

I’ve seen one Morse, I think. I rather like A Touch of Frost, too.

OpryLeigh's avatar

@Headhurts I can understand that!

filmfann's avatar

One more.

There used to be a show with 7 or 8 impressionists, called KopyKats.
Rich Little, Frank Gorshin, and a lot of very talented people redoing famous scenes, or mocking different actors. Very funny, but only lasted one summer.

ucme's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr The second series of Broadchurch is planned for next year, no idea when though.
Brace yourself, David Tennant may not show up, rumoured the cast will be overhauled.

Seek's avatar

Double damn.

Kardamom's avatar

@Leanne1986 There really is something about Martin Clunes! I’ve just found a bunch of behind the scenes clips from Doc Martin on Youtube, like This One. I think you might enjoy watching them, because Martin Clunes is actually smiling and laughing.

talljasperman's avatar

Married with Children, and Invader Zim.( I still have my squeally spooch ).

Seek's avatar

TACOS!

jordym84's avatar

@Leanne1986 and @Kardamom I agree!! I’ve always found him incredibly attractive. Not in the traditional sense, but there’s definitely something about him that makes him very desirable (for lack of a better term).

OpryLeigh's avatar

@Kardamom Thank you for that, he really is lovely!
