If fluther thinks I will lurve a question but I don't and just hit the not interested button does it get its feeling hurt?

Asked by rojo (24179points) September 10th, 2013

What I mean is, other than a vague idea, I do not fully understand the way it decides what I like and don’t like. Is it by topic? By questioner? random? And, if I choose not to respond to a particular question does it then say “Right, see if you get any more questions in that vein, Bucko!” and go into a snit or will it try to interest me in the same topic at some later date, like maybe when I am not so pissy?

I think there should be some difference between the Remove and Not Interested button. Intuitively, I’d think Remove means remove this question from my queue, whereas Not Interested means “whatever logical steps you made to think I’d be interested, don’t do that again”

Yes. And it cries salty tears. Shame on you.

Great question. I never push the not interested button. First, because I don’t want to admit there’s something in which I’m not interested, and second I don’t want to belittle anyone’s choice of a topic. I’m a hopeless pollyanna. (except when I’m not!)

It does work on algorithms based both on your topics, what you do answer and the “Not interested” button. If you remove a question, it will not used that in the algorithm, but if you hit “Not interested” it will assume you are not that interested in questions like that.

@Sunny2 No one else will know you were not interested in their question.

I believe that it is it’s butt that gets hurt.

I hit ‘Not Interested’ even when I am interested, because back in the day nearly every question was being sent to me. I had to remove a ton of topics from my profile and retrain Fluther that I only want to be notified about those questions in my area of expertise so I can focus on those first, then I’ll peruse the other questions. Yet somehow there are still Questions that don’t get sent to me that should have been.

I believe it’s based off of questions you’ve answered, and the topics you have added to your profile (tags)
Hitting the remove button will not change the way it chooses what to send you. Hitting “not interested” will.

Your question made me laugh! People have a habit of personalizing objects. I think it’s normal. I doubt the Fluther database is at all taken aback by your decision. I could go on but I noticed other jellies have said the same things that I was thinking so I’ll leave it rest. Have a great day! :)

@DWW25921 SSHHHHhhhh! It’ll hear you!

They all come to me and cry on my shoulder, while I gently pat their backs and say, “There, there. @rojo didn’t mean any harm. Shush, now.”

For real, though, the algorithm is complicated! “Not interested” is taken into consideration while “remove” isn’t. Topics on your profile and questions you’ve answered (and maybe asked, too) are also considered. Fluther is always trying to get to know you better. ;)

Is the person who asked the question taken into account in the algorithm. If I mostly answer one user’s Q’s, but mostly ignore another’s, does that factor?

janbb's avatar

@augustlan What I said.^^

So, it is like the NSA but nicer?

@drhat77 I don’t think so, but I could be wrong. The people you’re following are probably taken into consideration, though.

@janbb Dang penguin, always faster than I am! :)
