Do you chew gum regularly, or know people who do?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) May 23rd, 2016

I saw a man chewing a wad of gum madly today – I think he was starting a new chew – and it occurred to me that I don’t personally know anyone that chews gum on a regular basis.

When I was a kid decades ago seems like the majority of people chewed gum.
What happened?

I don’t notice but probably because at work, it doesn’t look professional. It actually looks kind of sleazy.

Never chew it myself any more and don’t really see anyone else chewing.

I keep gum in my car and my bag. I chew a piece after I drink coffee for about five minutes, then I wrap it in the paper and throw it away. I keep my mouth closed except when I blow a little bubble, which I can’t seem to help doing a couple times.
I don’t often see people chewing gum anymore either, but when I do they are generally obnoxious about it.

Used to. I find myself chewing less and less, and I only chew when there is a gum readily available. Mostly because of 2 reasons: I know I can’t get any much out from gums, just some sweet juice and then I’m left with a sticky blob, and disposing the aftermath is a pain in the ass, you can risk causing a lot of troubles with it. I prefer candies nowadays.

I used to. I love it! My husband hates when I chew gum. For a while I did it often because my ear was getting blocked. I was hoping it helped. A doctor told me to chew gum. I still never chewed often, because my husband couldn’t stand it, and I couldn’t at work.

Then, I started developing muscle troubles all over, including my jaw, and I couldn’t chew anymore. My muscle troubles are better, but I never started up chewing much again. I still love it though. I click click click while I chew. Very classy.

In college a girlfriend and I used to get all excited to have a piece of gum. Like little kids.

Nope, most gum is sugarfree these days and most of those sugar substitutes (sorbitol, xylitol, etc) are laxatives. Do not need that in my life.

I do. It doesn’t make me have to poop, though.

Yep, like @Jak I do it to clear coffee breath. And I really like Starbucks brand gum, nice and strong.

I buy gum and I carry it with me. Once in a rare while, if I’m out and I’m thirsty or I want to get rid of a food taste, I will chew it but for the most part I carry it and never use it.

I do. Usually to prevent myself from eating compulsively.

No, not anymore, haven’t done so for a long time
I prefer sucking on a Fisherman’s Friend, only when the tide is out though, very refreshing

I used to chew gum all the time. Was always snapping it making noise when small bit of air was trapped so I could pop it. Sugarless of course. I think I have a “busy mouth” because I also ground my teeth. I began chewing gum less often when certain brands were likely to stick to dental work. Not cool! I was also a smoker at that time.

I remember when I was a kid my great aunt would, as a treat, give us each ½ stick of Doublemint gum.
And we were thrilled.
Simpler times, thrifty people.

I do chew sugar free mint gum sometimes, before work or something, if I notice my mouth doesn’t taste so great.

I usually chew a stick of sugarless spearmint gum after lunch when I’m at work. I don’t work with the public, but I work closely with my co-workers. I often offer them gum too, and they like it. People even come down the hall looking for me to see if I will give them a piece of gum.

ibstubro's avatar

Very unusual in this day, IMO, @Kardamom.

@ibstubro Not where I live. Lots of people chew gum, and most of them are adults, at least that I know of. Everyone at work likes it. Mostly due to the fact that people eat lunch and then want to have fresh breath.

ibstubro's avatar

Honestly, I can’t think of a single person I know that chews gum, @Kardamom.
It’s almost non-existent around here. I saw someone in another car having a big chew the day I asked the question, because it’s that unusual.

You know me! Om nom nom nom

Apparently 56% of people chew gum, and gum is almost a $2 billion industry.

I like Orbit, personally. Sweet mint is my favourite normal flavour, but they have all sorts of yummy seasonal flavours.
