When sleeping, do you need to have a blanket (sheet) covering you, (or most of you) even when it's ridiculously hot?

Asked by Jude (32198points) September 7th, 2009

Even if I have a fever or my bedroom feels like a sauna, I need to have something covering me. Be it a thin blanket, or a sheet. Not all of my body needs to be covered (head, legs, and arms are usually exposed), but, the rest has to be covered, otherwise, I can’t sleep.

Anyone else like this?

Me, too. A sheet is a must. But then I get to cool, & pull the quilt up. THEN I’m too hot. It’s a constant back & forth with me to sleep. Between my husband & I, the bed looks like a real squirrel’s nest when we get up.

Sarcasm's avatar

Yup. Even hot summer nights I’ve always got at least a sheet over the majority of my body, with my legs and arms sticking out of it like a turtle.

teh_kvlt_liberal's avatar

what are these blankets you speak of?

perplexism's avatar

I’m the same. I can’t stand not having something covering me up – even if it’s really hot. It’s weird, at least my bf thinks so. (Okay, if it is really, really hot I will go sans cover, but I won’t like it.)

I like to sleep with head tucked underneath the covers, it comfortable to me. I also can’t stand to have my legs exposed.

Tink's avatar

Yes, I use a blanket, my blanket. And when I uncover myself I get cold, then I cover myself and get hot. So I turn in the fan and cover myself. That solves my problems.

casheroo's avatar

I have to have something covering me. My husband is the opposite. Usually we have the ceiling fan on so it keeps us cool…but I prefer to be under a cover at all times no matter the temperature.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

No, that’s stupid. If you have to have a blanket on you, why don’t you try cooling down the room?

sjmc1989's avatar

I have to sleep with a comforter totally covering me and at least two pillows both of these things are a must for my night time happiness!

casheroo's avatar

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities We do cool down the room, but even in the summer I have a blanket on me…we use a thin quilt. I don’t think that’s stupid.

SeventhSense's avatar

And why do these questions not get modded?

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@SeventhSense Why in the world would they? It’s a perfectly harmless question.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

@casheroo I didn’t mean you, if you have a blanket and a cool room that’s perfect, and exactly what I would do.

What I meant was the original question- Even if I have a fever or my bedroom feels like a sauna, I need to have something covering me. It seems really weird to me that you wouldn’t just try and cool the room down.

Jude's avatar

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities It is what it is. I just can’t sleep without having something covering me, no matter hot it is. Hence, the question. I was wondering if anyone else was like that, is all.

SeventhSense's avatar

@jbfletcherfan
It’s an opinion taking poll. I like a blanket, I don’t.
Illuminating. ~

polos's avatar

Typically I’d say yes I’d need to have something over me to have a good night’s sleep, but I can nap for hours without a cover. I hate waking up without something over me and being really cold though.

Ame_Evil's avatar

I have a duvet and then a blanket over the duvet. In winter its nice and warm, and even in summer its good as I can just reduce the amount of duvet covering me and just have more blanket. But yeah, I have never slept without something covering me. Not tried hard though, but I am a fussy sleeper.

I would like to sleep with minimalist things though – just a mattress for example or maybe just maybe one pillow. Reasons why would be to reduce cleaning, and generally being cheaper and having a less cluttered room. (I am a minimalist by nature).

aphilotus's avatar

I go both ways with blankets- sometimes I need them, sometimes I hate them, and those considerations are never based on temperature.

My fiancee, on the other hand, is a strictly blanket kind of girl, and a heavy comforter at that. As such, we actually use two blankets at night, a super-thin quilt for me and a heavy quilt for her, with some amount of ninja-work arm-snaking to snuggle.

chyna's avatar

I have a friend that has to have each leg and foot individually wrapped, one with the sheet, one with the blanket so they don’t touch. No matter how hot it is. A little strange.

Supacase's avatar

I do. A sheet is a must, but a blanket or comforter is preferred. I think I like the weight – maybe it is comforting. I stick a leg out if I get hot, but my torso must be covered.

If the conditions are sauna-like, I will use a sheet at first because it feels cool on my skin. After they get hot, I do ditch them and lay/sleep in sweaty misery. That is never a good sleep.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@chyna That’d be an awful lot of trouble. I wonder how long it stays that way?

teh_kvlt_liberal's avatar

…And what’s the deal with hotel blankets? Do they smell or what?

Jude's avatar

That’s what it is. What @Supacase said. It’s comforting.

chyna's avatar

@jbfletcherfan Apparently all night, because she says she will wake up if they become unwrapped. I asked what happens when her boyfriend stays over, never got an answer. :)

markyy's avatar

Last summer I spend a couple of nights without a blanket. However when I was a kid I could not sleep without my blanket, because somehow that blanket protected me against ghosts, aliens and monsters under my bed.

chyna's avatar

@markyy Must’ve worked, you are still here.

Bri_L's avatar

I have to have one over my bits and pieces. that’s it.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Bri_L Bits & pieces of what? ;-) LOL

DominicX's avatar

@SeventhSense If you’re not interested, then don’t follow the discussion. Jesus Christ, are we still having to tell people to ignore things like they’re 5 years old?

And yeah, every other question here is so illuminating.~

If it’s really hot, I’ll still have a sheet on me because I do like to have something covering me. I’m not going to use a comforter when it’s that hot, but I still use a sheet. It’s not too much. Unfortunately, when it’s really hot I find it hard to go to sleep. (I also never sleep naked).

aprilsimnel's avatar

I need at least a sheet. I also prefer white noise and a bit of a breeze, for some reason, so unless it’s beastly cold outside, I like open windows when I sleep.

evegrimm's avatar

I agree with @polos—I can sleep for a long time (nap, really) without any covering. But then again, usually when I’m napping, it’s because I really need some sleep, and am usually still in day clothes and/or not necessarily complicit in the falling asleep bit. (“I’ll just close my eyes for a bit…”) Simillarly, I don’t need a cover when I’m sleeping in the car (although sometimes it’s nice; it tends to get chilly in there!).

For the most part, I attribute my needing covering of some sort to two things: 1, it’s cozy. I like being cozy. and 2, that creepy Disney movie from, what, 10–15 years ago, where if you were ‘covered’ up you wouldn’t get…something. (It was a bad something.)

jamielynn2328's avatar

I can’t sleep without a blanket under my head. If it is painfully hot, I will hug the blanket instead of putting it on top of me.

drdoombot's avatar

I’m the same way. On some nights, I find it quite comforting to put a pillow over my head as well.

Facade's avatar

I like having my lower half covered and my top half uncovered

Jack79's avatar

Yes, I’m like that too. I feel naked if I’m not covered (usually because I am naked). Also in the summer there could be mosquitoes, and generally I feel more comfortable covered to the neck.

augustlan's avatar

I use a heavy quilt, but it’s cool to the touch. When it gets too warm, I shift it about to find a cool spot. I always have to have at least my torso covered in bed, where I sleep naked. It is the weight of it that I find comforting… a sheet just wouldn’t have the same effect.

galileogirl's avatar

I sleep with this mask that blows cool air in my face and I wake up from the cold air w/o a cover up to my chin. Sometimes I sleep with a fan pointed at my body because I need that cover.

avvooooooo's avatar

I use a comforter, but only the fluffy ones. They kind of sit up away from you rather than draping over you like sheets do. I have to have something, but I generally don’t like the feeling of a sheet lying all over me.

OpryLeigh's avatar

Yes I do, having said that, unless I am ill, I am very rarely too hot.

irocktheworld's avatar

Yes…:P I use my blanket to cover myself, thin or thick and i use it because I am scared of the dark and I think like something might come out and touch me or something freaky like that.:P Like if I have my door or closet open,I would get a little bit scared and cover myself. That’s just how I am and I hope sooner or later,I will get over my fear of darkness.:O

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

I like to be covered, preferably in cushiness so sometimes that means turning down the air conditioner so it’s cool enough to snuggle in the bed.

avvooooooo's avatar

@irocktheworld Try watching Ghost Hunters before you go to bed. You’ll really think something is coming to get you! :D

five99one's avatar

Yes, I usually need a blanket or sheet at least partially covering me to be comfortable and fall asleep. This really sucks in the summer when there’s no air.

augustlan's avatar

@five99one Welcome to Fluther!

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

I can’t sleep without a T-shirt on. Naked from the waist down is fine. I also like a fan blowing on me hard enough to blow the sheet right off. So I just cover my naughty bits in the summer, (tucking the sheet under my hip) and leave my feet poking out in the winter with the blanket pulled up to my chin. My favorite blanket is an afghan. A friend made it for me, and she used all sorts of crazy colored yarn, because she figured it should match my personality. =).

justn's avatar

I have to have something covering my body or I can’t sleep. If its crazy hot I’ll stick my legs out or cover myself up to my waist.

rottenit's avatar

Yes, I need something to cover me as well, maybe its like linus and the security blanket?

irocktheworld's avatar

@avvooooooo Im terrified of ghosts!!! Omg! Ill never do that!:P

avvooooooo's avatar

@irocktheworld I had to watch with my back firmly against the headboard… and then I needed to go to sleep and it was a total “SHIT!” moment! Some of that stuff is entirely too freaky! Then again, sometimes its not so bad. :D

irocktheworld's avatar

@avvooooooo Lol yeahh! I hate those “Shit!” moments! I get them all the time :P But im really freaked out on ghosts, seriously.Ive seen a ghost,in pictures,in real life, but i dont think movies count.:P They just freak me out. 0_o
