How to have a red, black and white bedroom theme?

Asked by Moxy (182points) October 25th, 2010

I have sky blue walls, light brown cupbaoards aswell as a white wardrobe and dressing table. I am getting a red and black wine quilt cover 7 piece set. I have white lamps and 1 red vase with red roses in it sitting on my side cupboard with a red table runner over it. Please help me design a good theme to go with my bed. I also have red curtains. I might be getting black storage baskets to store my harry potter stuff in.

I had a red and black and white bedroom for years. I painted my walls white, and chose one wall for a red accent wall. I put up black blinds and curtains, used accent pillows in black and red (my bedset was also black and red). I had dark gray carpet and dark furniture. It probably doesn’t sound like much, but it really was beautiful. So this color scheme can work in a bedroom.

I would choose which of the 3 you would like to be your dominant color. The color you choose as the dominant color will have a huge effect on the look of the entire room. Black would make the room rather dark, though you could probably manage to make it elegant if you were careful. Red is very bold. If you go with white as your dominant color, and use the others as accents.. it will be more subtle.

I would paint your furniture black or white (whichever you prefer), and paint the walls a different color than the furniture. Perhaps with an accent wall, as I had. Depending on the size of the bedroom (if it is a bit on the small side) you might want to go with mostly white walls.

I can’t really help too much without seeing the room, but my main bit of advice would be to not paint your walls black or put any black paint on the wall. instead use black curtains or something else. If you paint a wall or all the walls black it will make the room look and feel smal, and on top of that its an absolute nightmare to paint over it in the future.

Maybe you should make a few sketches and drawings first to save you time and money.

I would down play the black, with accessories, curtains and furniture. Use red for trim and bedding, and paint three walls white, one wall black and red stripes.

Allow me to say this from experience: strictly from the point of view of how easy it is to paint, red is 10x harder than black. Black takes a few coats, red takes, like, 15. I mean, it’s gorgeous after, but it’s pretty much murder getting it that way. It also looks like murder while you’re doing it…

@papayalily really? I didn’t have that problem with the red wall in my room. I wonder if I just got lucky, and if it is the norm to have a difficult time getting coverage with red. I’d be inclined to believe it, just didn’t happen in my case.

@TheOnlyNeffie It may have been the shade of red. But yeah, we had to keep putting coats on for a week, but the black wall was done within a day.

A good tip for painting walls red or black: Make sure you use a tinted primer first. Ask the paint store, and they’ll mix it up for you. It helps achieve the coverage you need with fewer coats.

Instead of black or red walls, I would suggest using a warm medium to dark gray or taupe for one accent wall. Then the other walls could be a very light gray (make sure the light gray is complimentary with the dark gray or taupe, paint test areas first and check the colors with the actual type of light that you will be using in the room). That’s what I have in my room and the other three walls are a light (like the actual color of butter) neutral tone. The room doesn’t look dark. If you can hang a lamp or place a free standing lamp in front of the accent wall it will look very rich. I have one white Japanese paper lantern (very inexpensive) hanging from the ceiling in front of my accent wall. Then paint the cupboards white and paint the wardrobe red (try to pick a red that isn’t shocking or too much like a primary red, something in the red wine family would look very nice and sophisticated). Then you can accessorize with red and black items. If you make the curtains black, use a very sheer black fabric, not a dark blankety fabric which will make the room look stuffy and heavy.

If you can post a picture of the room, it would be helpful.
