(possibly NSFW) What would cause red spots on hands from drug use?

Asked by linguaphile (14574points) March 6th, 2012

Two different people that I know who use drugs both have a series of about 10 to 15 small red spots on the back of only their left hand, not their right hand.

I’m illiterate about this kind of thing, but what type of drug use would cause red spots on the back of hands? I can’t tell if they’re injections or burns.

I don’t know which drug would cause it, but it sounds like an allergic reaction of some sort. I’ve heard that the street drug called meth causes spots that the person will often pick at so that they bleed and scab over.

If they are right handed, are they shooting up into their left hand? Do they look like needle marks? That’s my only idea.

Probably injection drug use, as @cazzie has said. Many people inject into the hand as the veins are convenient and easy to see. Since the injections aren’t sterile, you end up with track marks. However, it is more common in the arm than the hand. Some people like to skin pop which is to inject drugs directly under the skin. However, this is rarely done in visible spots as the skin popping can happen anywhere, and many drug users are savvy enough not to inject where people can see it. Another possibility is extensive itching, which is a side effect of heroine use.

You are ignorant on these things, not illiterate.

I think they are probably track marks also.

I don’t understand why you’re assuming the marks are related to drug use? You have probably had vaccinations in your life and know what an injection looks like. If it looks like that, maybe they are injecting drugs in that area. But maybe they just have eczema or something.

Thanks everyone. I’m asking this question out of genuine concern. I’d like to initiate a conversation that addresses this indirectly, like in an analogy form, but I want to make sense. My concern might be moot, though, because they both seem hellbent on getting in that handbasket and I don’t think I’m the one who can stop them.

@nikipedia These are known drug users, and are two completely different people who have near-identical spots. I wouldn’t bet on the odds of two teenagers having identically located and spotted eczema.

@JLeslie Thanks—
