What should I do with my depression ?

Asked by Highbrow (366points) January 5th, 2013

All the members of my family thinks I may have depression. What should I do? It’s starting to affect me quite badly. The stress levels have gone through the roof!

I know I’m well-advised to try some relaxation techniques—like controlling breathing, yoga, meditation, etc. Perhaps I should see a psychiatrist or a therapist to determine what kind of help would be best for me.

Would you have quick tips that I could make use of?

Exercise. The best antidote to depression. That and Magnesium and DHA supplements

That and Magnesium and DHA supplements=This is precisely what I am currently doing and it seems to work pretty well.

If it bothers you, have yourself evaluated so you know the type of depression you’re suffering from and the medication that will work best for you. I also suggest exercise and chocolate.

Try to sell it on e-bay

@YARNLADY Do you think anyone would buy it? And if she could sell it, do you think she could find a way to deliver it to someone else? Because that would be totally awesome, and that’s what I’ll do next time I get it.

See your doctor. They can help you find a therapist and/or medication that may help you. Please don’t suffer longer than you have to. Best of luck!

See a psychiatrist to get a diagnosis. Your family, unless they are psychiatrists, can’t diagnose you. Once you have a diagnosis, the psychiatrist can offer you various remedies that might help.

As others here have said, exercise really does make a difference. I would also suggest that you maintain structure in your life/schedule. It’s easy when you’re not working, not in school, or not otherwise occupied to become paralyzed by depression. Exercisising and staying busy to a certain extent will keep you focused and increase your energy and thought processes.

Medication may also help, but be aware that not all of the work the same way for everyone, and some have side effects that may not be pleasant/helpful. Be sure to work with your doctor/psychiatrist/therapist in figuring out what’s best for you, the dosage, etc.

Good luck.
