What kind of gift should I give?

Asked by nmguy (528points) February 5th, 2013

When I was in high school 50 years ago, I was sports editor of the school newspaper. Recently, my old journalism teacher got in touch with me via e-mail and asked whether I would like a collection of school papers during the time that I was writing. I said, “Yes, by all means”, and they arrived in the mail today. Needless to say, there’s no value that can be applied to this extremely kind gesture. I would like to send him something special as a thank-you , but flowers, fruit arrays, and candy don’t seem to be appropriate. Any suggestions? This teacher had a real impact on my life.

What a beautiful gesture!!

I think it would be wonderful to get him “something”, but the first thing that sprang to my mind was a letter. What if you wrote him a letter about the impact that he’s had on your life, what made him a meaningful teacher, memories you have of his classes, etc. Sometimes a letter like that can be more meaningful than any present.

and a giftcard for a lovely dinner at a restaurant wouldn’t hurt either ;) ;)

Hey @nmguy, welcome to Fluther.
That is so lovely of him to think of you and send you this collection.
The first idea that comes to mind for me is a gift certificate to a good local restaurant. You might be able to purchase one online; many small restaurants have websites now. Or you could call them. Teachers are most often woefully underpaid. And I think it would be a very nice way to thank him for taking the time to send you this gift all these years after he had such a big impact on your life.

@MissRosie81‘s got it. Nothing will warm a teacher’s heart like a sincere letter of thanks.

I agree with these two ^^. A lovely letter and a gift card are sure to be appreciated.

I love the suggestions the other people gave but the edible treats savor the flavor along with the well thought out letter. I would suggest the kind that has the fruit – it goes a long way and last and it something that is beautiful and he can share with his friends/collegues if he chooses.
