What do you buy too much of?

Asked by LornaLove (10037points) May 6th, 2013

Too many shoes? Or is technology your thing?

How much is too much? And why do you think you keep on doing it?

Mine is make up and I hardly wear any of it. I am not sure why, but it is as addicting to me as candy! I would even steal a lipstick out of your purse (in front of you) if you came to visit!

Makeup is a big one for me, too. I can easily drop $400 at Sephora, and that’s with self control.

Pringles.. I can’t get enough of them!

Books. I’m sitting on the living room floor and I can see 18 books from where I sit. That’s without looking at a bookshelf. And stay out of my purse lady.

Books. I can’t resist them.

New tops… well clothes really.

I buy too many clothes. If I find an item of clothing that fits well, I may buy it in several different colors. Even though I don’t need clothes, if I find something I like, I can’t resist.

I buy too much soap. I’m into scents and so if I find nice soap with nice scents at a good price, I can’t resist.

I have about 8 bottles of perfume on my dresser. Again, I’m into scents.

Jewelry – if it’s well priced (sale, clearance, etc.) and it’s unusual, I can’t resist.

I do decoupage, so I am always looking for books with nice reproductions of art work. Something with vintage images, like retro stuff, ditto. Also, note paper and cards that have these images are items I can’t resist. Sometimes greeting cards and wrapping paper have good images I can use, so I have to buy them.

Food. We have good intentions to cook during the week, but we’re usually worn out by the time we get home after work, we’re worn out.

Books definitely. Especially old collectibles.
from Hay-On-Wye bookstores in Cardiff, Wales.
They have a fair every Feb, also on line website addresses.
I recently moved, and gave away to used bookstores 300 books.
I had about 1000+.
Kept purchasing from used bookstores, flea markets, garage sales et.
Also about 150 DVD’s gave to the Library for the community to share.

I buy too much sheet music from the thrift store. Less than two quarters for a book of songs…why wouldn’t you?

Food—at least I buy it too often. I don’t like to stock up on food because if it’s in the house, I eat it too fast. So I wind up going to the supermarket almost every day. I know it’s not the right way to buy groceries, but I’ve been doing it for so many years I wouldn’t know how to break the habit.

Also, I love electronic gadgets, so I used to spend way too money money on ‘em. Hopwever, I’ve slowed down on that.

^^^ Yes, food. Especially desserts. Baking a berry pie right on on a cold & rainy spring evening. Also fuel. I drive too much just because, aside from need.

My main offenders are nail polish, makeup, and clothes. It’s just so hard to resist when I find something I really like and feel like I can’t live without!

I used to spend a lot on books, but now I just tend to visit the library more frequently since it’s not really feasible to buy enough books to keep me in reading material!

Makeup! I have 5 large makeup boxes full of makeup and that’s not even 1/5 of the makeup I own. It’s mostly MAC and TooFaced, probably $6,000 (lowest estimate) .

I eat out too much instead of taking lunch to work.

DVDs.
Between the DVDs, the LaserDiscs, and the VHS tapes, I have close to 1800 movies.
How many times am I gonna watch the Sopranos? Did I need to buy all 6 seasons?

gailcalled's avatar

Am I the only one who hates storing, repairing and dusting all those unnecessary possessions? I own two lip glosses, a brown eyebrow pencil in need of sharpening and some blusher, probably from 2006.

I get all DVDs, CDs and books from our wonderful library. That way, I get to return them.

My two shoulder bags seem one too many. And three pairs of walking shoes feels really decadent.

DigitalBlue's avatar

@gailcalled I agree with you.

I was really thinking very hard for an answer to this question, but I don’t get much joy out of shopping. I buy things that I need and I wait a long time before buying things that I want (just to be sure that I really want them.) I don’t like accumulating a lot of material possessions, it just makes me feel weighed down.
I really enjoy window shopping, though. I like to look at lots of pretty things… I just hate spending money. My husband, on the other hand, loves to shop. He definitely gets that high from obtaining new things. I just have never really had that.

Hand sanitizer
I have huge bottles of fancy scents everywhere. I just can’t resist a fancy scent even if I have so many at home that are nearly full. Morning Fresh, Sweet Pea, and Aloe are my favourites.

Books…haven’t read half of the ones I have now.

Book, books and um, more books. I have boxes in my garage that, not only have I not read them but I have not opened the boxes in a couple of years. Yet, I still buy more.

Food.

We do two large and two small shoppings a month, cook a ton of food every Sunday (for the week), and still manage to eat out twice a month and get take out a couple times.

What’s more, we shop at four or five different places for different items (Market Basket, Trader Joes, local butcher, local farm) — so it’s quite the outing.

Tuna Fish. It’s the only kind of fish I like, and I have over 100 cans of it. I’m always afraid I’ll run out.

I’m embarrassed to say this but… nothing. I don’t buy too much of anything. When I finally do open my wallet it is for food or something useful that will last a long time. Heck, earlier I asked this question about my clothes lasting forever.

augustlan's avatar

Right now, my answer is the same as @Symbeline.‘s Except I do buy too many cigarettes. When I have money, it’s books for sure. There are never enough books! And junk food. To a lesser degree, shoes. But I’m not buying pretty shoes…I’m on a never-ending quest for comfortable shoes. Especially house shoes (clogs).

bookish1's avatar

I love having the excuse to buy shoes, but I don’t own that many pairs at once, and I keep them for years. I just bought dress shoes and respectable sneakers this year, and those were my first shoe purchases for 3 or 4 years.

I think recently I’ve been spending too much money on drinks and savory snacks…

Seek's avatar

Books. I’ve given up furniture space for books. We walk sideways down our hallway to get past bookshelves.

Fortunately, I have ways to not spend much money for the many books I do buy. And again, if anyone finds themselves lacking reading material, PM me with a genre or an example of something you enjoy, and I will send you books. No charge. Happy to share. ^_^
