They say, "you can't go home again." But have you done it? Details inside.

Has anyone grown up in a Utopia then had to move away? Did you spend time wistfully thinking of the quaint shopping, the old friends, the tree lined streets, the weather and wished you could move back and capture the flavor of those years? Then one day, you did it. You moved back and many of your old friends were still there, most of the quaint downtown was intact, the wonderful local cuisine was just as good as ever and you were blissfully happy to be back ? And now you’re home again for good.

Sort of. I’ve been wrenched away twice. When I first moved to Santa Barbara I had no idea what a paradise it is.

I lived there for many years before economic issues forced me to move. After a few years, I was fortunate enough to move back, and I lived there another 10 years before other economic issues forced me to move again.

I miss living there nearly every day, although I have a lovely home in a nice little suburb, and have built a family here.

Went back for my 10 year class reunion, couldn’t find an answer to ‘why am I here?’ so I never went back again.

Yes, I have moved back home again. I left as soon as I graduated from high school and didn’t look back. I left a small town and moved to DC, then Minneapolis and then Chicago. Ten years later, \when a two-year relationship came to an end and my father died a week later, I packed everything up and moved back in with Mom. Being back in the home town shed insight about the positive factors of this small city that had not been appreciated in the past.

There were also changes in this small southern community. It was refreshing to see the positive shift in attitude towards minorities and “outsiders”. Neighbors were still looking out for each other.

What is sad is to talk to old friends who never left the town and fear traveling further than a 200 mile radius. Oh, what they are missing.

I visit my parents a couple times a year – medium sized old-line industrial town in Ohio. It was where I spent the first 20 years of my life.

No way could I live in Ohio again. Not just because of the weather, This city in Ohio has tried and failed so many times to become a real city again. There are hundreds of blighted city blocks from the race riots of the 1960s – 50 years later, they still look like crap.

The people there just seem perpetually depressed. (That may be the weather!)

Anyway, at some point my aging parents will pass on, and then there will never be a reason to visit northern Ohio.
