What myths do you feel have been brought to light by the murder spree of Elliot "The Day of Retribution" Rodger?

Asked by pleiades (6617points) May 25th, 2014

For instance, is there one thing that jumps out as a truth for you more than the other? Was he bullied? Was he too weird? Or was he simply a spoiled entitled misogynic? Was it his upbringing? Or is he legitimately mentally ill.

If you believe him to be mentally ill, what is the difference between this white murderer vs a black murderer? (I’m reading a lot of articles stating that because he is white, the media will cap a “mentally ill” tag on him while if he were a minority not from a rich background he would tagged as a “thug.”

I don’t believe it’s anyone factor that determines what people tag him as. For instance the Virginia Tech shooter, who was Asian, could have also been seen as “mentally ill.” But why is it? Is it because they are surrounded by an educational institute or backed by money that causes others to believe one is either mentally ill or a thug.

He was more attractive than I am and he was rich and I am poor. I can get laid but he can’t. Maybe the ladies picked up that he was fucking crazy.

The whole MRA thing is bonkers. Go here to see the type of shit this asshole emerged from.

GA @johnpowell. If you want even worse than MRA, check The Red Pill. Lots of people theorizing right now that that cesspool was his home. This shit is scary.

Is he literally one of those users? Either way, those writers are assholes to come to their conclusions without hard evidences. It’s interesting seeing where the freak mindset comes to erroneous conclusions based on their own petty feelings.

He’s pathetic in this video of his intentions, posted one day before his rampage.

Flat affect, scripted monotone soliloquy. He uses the same adjectives over and over. A poor vocabulary and grandiose display of intended villain.

I believe him, though, when he says he wants to kill women because they didn’t want him and he deserved to be wanted. Scary.

For me it bings to light the myth of the “nice guy. Here are a few articles from Buzzfeed talking about what self proclaimed nice guys really are. The term seems to have come to represent a particular breed of narcissistic man who believes that if he is kind to a woman in any way she owes him sex. They befriend women, date women, buy them dinner, take them to movies etc., for the sole purpose of getting them in to the sack. If the woman is not interested, she becomes the enemy. Based on his horrifying vieo, this fellow seems to fit that description exactly. And says so many things my ex-husband says it sent chills down my spine.

I suppose one could argue this boy had Narcissiric Personality Disorder which would make him mentally ill. That makes him no less accountable for his actions.

johnpowell's avatar

@pleiades :: From what I gather he was on Reddit in those subreddits and had actually announced what he was going to do. Obviously, that has all been deleted.

GloPro's avatar

@FlyingWolf Did you catch that he never made advances on the girls in the sorority? He says he would have been rejected HAD he made advances. He never made an effort, or if he did it was as creepy as his video. He lived this punished fantasy out in his head. Narcissistic fits well, but there is more to it than that. The flat affect he displays is common in depression and schizophrenia, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see one or both of those in conjunction with Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

GloPro's avatar

@johnpowell Look at my link. He explicitly lays out his plan.

Coloma's avatar

I read his entire manifesto online last night, and while he was clearly narcissistic, no doubt, still, I felt sorry for him. It is just tragic, all the way around.
Some people just do not cope well with their issues. As always, the question, why do some suffer serious abuse and hardship and yet, never commit a crime or perpetrate abuse on others, when others, that have had half the hardships of some, go nuts and snap?

FlyingWolf's avatar

@GloPro that is what is so interesting about narcissists; the dichotomy of being legends in their own mind and the not having much self-confidence.

From his video I got the impression that instead of asking girls out he was trying to manipulate them into wanting to be with him by setting himself up as their friend and confidant. I think most women (even young women) catch on to that particular ploy pretty quickly, see the creep for what he really is, and cut off contact. That of course leads the boy to think the girl is a bitch for seeing through his bullshit.

johnpowell's avatar

@GloPro :: I mean the shit was deleted from the creepy subreddits.

jca's avatar

By the way, his name is not Rodgers, it’s Rodger.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@GloPro Interesting video – that was not at all what I expected. Every motion, every laugh is so practiced and wooden. He clearly did this in the mirror a lot before filming it, and that makes it difficult to take any of the content seriously. Part of me wonders if he is trying to leave the impression that he wanted girls… when perhaps he didn’t at all.

pleiades's avatar

@jca Ah let’s edit that in!

johnpowell's avatar

@dappled_leaves :: Well, he was the son of the assistant director of The Hunger Games.

I didn’t read the manifesto yet but this seemed like a kid who had a lot of advantages over your typical kid.

pleiades's avatar

@dappled_leaves No I believe he wanted woman. But from the creepiness of his persona, I can see why he didn’t get what he wanted.

There is something seriously misfiring in the brain of a kid sitting behind the wheel of his new BMW at a beach in Southern California beach complaining about how unfair life is to him.

What he has to say in all his videos is made that much creepier by how scripted, contrived, and somehow arrogant it sounds. It almost sounds like since everything else in his life has been handed to him without his exerting much effort, he expects that women should be handing themselves to him as well.

johnpowell's avatar

Well, in his world women were property. I’m glad the asshole is dead. It is just a shame he took others with him.

Coloma's avatar

@jca True, but it goes to show that wealth, advantage and material comforts have little, if anything, to do with true happiness. You know, the poor little rich boy/girl saying.
He clearly had severe issues with his self esteem, his narcissism, ( which is common in teens/young people anyway ) but not when it crosses into extreme pathology.
Plenty of disadvantaged people have gone wrong too, but I think it is harder for most people when it is a person, they perceive, as having every advantage.

pleiades's avatar

Seems also a lot of the entitlement trickled down from his fathers success

elbanditoroso's avatar

The biggest surprise to me is that he was a virgin at age 22. This is California!!

Coloma's avatar

@elbanditoroso Well….poor kid, yeah, he obviously felt like a complete outcast, and no, I am not condoning what he did, but as long as our culture glorifies sexuality as the end all and be all of the universe there are going to be a lot of younger kids/people that feel somehow inferior if they are not able to “get some” as they see their peers doing.
Also, lets not forget, this kid WAS attending a school and living in an area known for its affluent demographic so, in realty, he probably WAS right, in many ways, that he was being shunned by the popular and pretty girls and bullied by the jocks.
College cliques can be brutal, and while this is no excuse, bottom line, lots of snobby rich kids that shared his own attitude. He obviously experienced the same issues in high school.

GloPro's avatar

He reminds me of Patrick Bateman.
”…there is an idea of a Patrick Bateman, some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me, only an entity, something illusory, and though I can hide my cold gaze and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable: I simply am not there. It is hard for me to make sense on any given level. Myself is fabricated, an aberration. I am a noncontingent human being. My personality is sketchy and unformed, my heartlessness goes deep and is persistent. My conscience, my pity, my hopes disappeared a long time ago (probably at Harvard) if they ever did exist. There are no more barriers to cross. All I have in common with the uncontrollable and the insane, the vicious and the evil, all the mayhem I have caused and my utter indifference toward it, I have now surpassed. I still, though, hold on to one single bleak truth: no one is safe, nothing is redeemed. Yet I am blameless. Each model of human behavior must be assumed to have some validity. Is evil something you are? Or is it something you do? My pain is constant and sharp and I do not hope for a better world for anyone. In fact, I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape. But even after admitting this—and I have countless times, in just about every act I’ve committed—and coming face-to-face with these truths, there is no catharsis. I gain no deeper knowledge about myself, no new understanding can be extracted from my telling. There has been no reason for me to tell you any of this. This confession has meant nothing….”

Yet again, another young white male lashes out at society.

I recommend giving this article a read: http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2014/0525/Why-Santa-Barbara-shootings-are-not-just-about-gun-control

elbanditoroso's avatar

@DominicX – why is it that these mass shootings tend to be overwhelmingly white males?

What about disaffected blacks? They have similar access to firearms – why aren’t they shooting up large populations?

And what about women? What sort of equality do we have in this country if we don’t have women shooting up stores and classrooms?

canidmajor's avatar

I found this article relevant. Even here, on a fairly even-tempered (by comparison to others) site, I have seen questions from angry men that can’t “get” women even though they are “nice” men. I won’t expound further, I figure you all know what I mean.

Coloma's avatar

@elbanditoroso Serial killers are also predominantly white.
The Atlanta shootings some years ago and Richard Ramirez are just about the only two spree killers/ serial killers that have not been white.
North american serial killers have also been amazingly rampant in the last 35–40 years, dozens of these demons, ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, Henry Lee Lucas, Edmond Kemper, the Green river killer, on and on and on. No rhyme or reason.

One of my theories is that the sheer numbers of people these days ramps up the potential for more of these crimes. It’s a numbers game. More people = more crazy popping out of the wood work.

elbanditoroso's avatar

@Coloma – agreed. But even then, we ought to have some (small) percentage of women represented.

Coloma's avatar

@elbanditoroso

Oh, there are a few women that come to mind. Eileen Wornos ( sp? ), Dorthea Puente, and quite a few that have murdered their own children. Lots of psycho moms that have murdered their babies, often because of a boyfriend/man. Gah!

I don’t know, but according to most pick-up artist websites people’s lives would had been saved had he learned game. It was the same baloney with Sodini and Hitler too. I guess this goes to show you what vile low-lives most guys that frequent these PUA sites really are.
