What are some universal things or jokes or events that would be funny to everyone?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46813points) August 11th, 2014

The things some people think are funny I just don’t get. Bodily function jokes for one, or jokes about sagging boobs, stuff like that. There are some friends on fb who will post a video saying it’s funny, and I won’t bother to look because I know that I wouldn’t enjoy it or think it’s funny. There was a video of this contortionist who gave the illusion he had his head physically up his butt. They were just rolling. I shook my head and turned the thing off.

I know that some of the things I think are funny others wouldn’t think are funny.

So what are some things that are universally funny, and why?

I’m not sure there is anything that’s funny to everyone. I highly doubt it.

Or, you know…your mom.

I think humor is too varying and subjective to generalize one universal thing that would be “funny” to everyone. It took us some time just to think of a universal gesture a while back.

longgone's avatar

@dxs Which gesture did that end up being?

You tell me if you don’t find the link funny, and remember they are Canadian.

I don’t know. You can be with a group of people who don’t even speak your language, and you don’t speak theirs, but things can happen that causes every one to spontaneously laugh.

@longgone I think there were a few, but one that I remember was “the pee pee dance”. Answer is crdited to @talljasperman.

And the hands up like warding something off….

Silly accidents like stumbling or falling or slipping, animals doing funny things, children doing cute kid stuff.

If you take notice, most of the time I try to make my jokes universal because I’m not verse on Western culture.

Watching a toddler laughing at their self in a mirror, self amusement !

There are some classic skits from the old Carol Burnett show that would be difficult to prevent yourself from laughing at. You can find them on YouTube to see what I mean.

The top two on my list would be the dentist sketch with Tim Conway (as the bumbling dentist) and Harvey Korman.

The second would be the parody of Gone With The Wind where she descends the mansion staircase wearing an actual set of green curtains with the rod still in them and cinched at the waist.

After enough pause to let the audience laughter die down, the next two lines by her and the guy are just perfect.

This one conceivably might not be as funny to someone from another culture not familiar with the film. But the dentist one is as close to universal as it is possible to be. Tim Conway really was an excellent physical comedian.

(I’m on my old iPhone so can’t do links but they’re easy enough to find from the YT Search bar.

^ The dentist.

That was funny! :]

@longgone

Thanks for posting the link. Now everyone can enjoy it.

That really is as close to universal as it gets since it’s something everyone has experienced and requires no language familiarity.

Conway really is a comic genius.

Here is a classic Tim Conway, Carole Burnett, Mama, and Dick van Dyke. It is freaking HILARIOUS!! Especially Mama’s line at the end, “Is the little shit done yet??”

The nut shot.

Dutchess_III's avatar

See..I don’t find that funny at all @talljasperman. I wouldn’t find it funny if a woman was hit in the breasts, either.

dxs's avatar

Nut shots are so painful to watch! I find no humor in it at all!

talljasperman's avatar

@dxs @Dutchess_III How about the other peoples reaction to the nut shot. Men cringing.

dxs's avatar

Nah. Still not funny.

Nah. Still not funny.

I don’t find it funny when it is on television. When I was a little kid I watched it on AFV (America’s Funniest Home Videos) I’ve had a nut shot 15 years ago and It is still healing so I don’t find it funny anymore, But I though someone might still like it.

But the crux of this thread is “universal.” Something that everyone would find funny.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

DID any of you check out the link I posted??
check it out then tell me you don’t find that funny.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I think it was but don’t have time to watch the whole thing. I just watched the first episode…but I’m not sure who the gag was supposed to be on…..so I’m not laughing. But I do love stuff like that!
However, I would think someone from a primitive African tribe wouldn’t get it…

dxs's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 My wifi managed to load the first two skits and it was ehh.

talljasperman's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 I don’t watch Just for Laughs “Gags” I hate when they pretend to be police officers.
