Where in Canada and the USA should I go for a holiday with my mom?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24463points) August 17th, 2016

I’m interested in Science (space and physics and human biology ‘no bugs’) and good beef ribs. My mom is interested in Genealogy and census records on family. I won’t leave until after my bills are paid in February. I only will leave for one week. We might not go, but is fun to dream. We might just stay in Red Deer and eat out and shop at Chapters.

Does she have special interests? When my mom visits, I have to balance “things I like that I want to show my mom” with “things my mom wants to see that may not interest me”.

@Call_Me_Jay Genealogy and census records are some of my moms interests.

The air and space museum in Washington, DC is pretty cool.

Mormons have a thing where you posthumously baptize people. They’ve accumulated one of Earth’s best genealogical libraries to help people find their ancestors.

Family History Library

But that would be a research trip, not a vacation.

Maybe there’s a site where your ancestor’s lived, or they arrived in North America?

I’m just throwing out ideas.

I was going to suggest Utah also for the data the Mormons have been compiling.

She might like New York City to see Ellis Island where so many immigrants came into the US. You could look at EllisIsland.org. I’ve only looked at it to get my grandfather’s information regarding when he came to America, I don’t know what other information it has. While in NYC you can go to the museum of natural history’s planetarium.

You can get census data online. I think it is released after 75 years. I might be wrong about the 75, it might be more or less.

There are all sorts of beef ribs places across America, you should make this a secondary priority I think. Once you find places that interest you, then we will help you find ribs nearby.

You can visit the the Keneddy Space center in sunny, warm, Florida.

I think you are in BC right? I loved my Alaskan cruise. It’s not really pertaining to the things you mentioned, but I just thought I’d throw it out there. You could get a last minute cruise extremely cheap if there is still availability. It’s the end of the season probably.

@RedDeerGuy1, why don’t you ask her which places have come up during her genealogical research and suggest you go on a visit to wherever your ancestors lived historically? She probably has addresses and the like, and you could see if any of the buildings still exist.

Huntsville, Alabama – to the space center and NASA exhibits.

Actually, much closer to you is the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago – you can spend days there.

Salt Lake City for genealogy.

Houston could meet your space science and food requirements.
